Made some quick and crude H frames with a pair of 15” subwoofers with a QTS of .47 And an Fs of 21hz. Low passed at 140hz to some Dayton 3.5” fullrangers in sealed boxes and the sound is simply incredible!…..I’ve never had bass so articulate…..stand up acoustic bass is just amazing and cello?…….woah. If it gets any better than this, somebody share please. Didn’t take any measurements but I can tell I’m getting firm response to 35hz.
Dipole mids and highs are also very nice... have you considered dropping the enclosure entirely?
Don’t you need some separation in time and space between the inverse wavefronts or cancellations will have too much effect on low frequency output? I’m only asking these to play bass and sub bass…..
I’m fortunate in that the 15’s I’m using have an xmax of 11mm and an xmech of nearly 20mm but I see your point. Since I think I’ve found a home now with Dipole woofers, I think I’ll be looking for a Pro amp with DSP so I can set a HP filter and flatten the response with parametric EQ. I’m also going to have to rebuild the H frames…..there’s NO WAY the other half is gonna live with these in her living room looking the way they do.
In THEORY a double bass array is better 😉.
In real live it's the best I ever had and heard but I don't have experience with open baffle. Which will probably change as I have 2 nice driver for that spare from a project, but this will take some time ...

If you think that crapshoot sounds good, why don't you try and make a real dipole system and see how deep the rabbit hole goes?
To clarify, I was asking about the sealed enclosure for the midtweet. You could run the Dayton driver OB as well and it may sound good.
I used 18" units in H-frames, crossed to Radian 8" coax drivers (also on open baffle), with the same impression of the bass. Bass is articulate and realistic. The overall sound is the some of the best I've heard. A lot of work was done on the crossover to achieve acoustic phase alignment, listenable frequency response, and an easy impedance load.

Well Charlie, here’s the thing…when I first did the rough build, the PS fullrangers were mounted OB…..it was a crude HP filter mind you, BUT the 3D soundstage was too much……individual instruments couldn‘t be resolved with any depth and I was missing the point source soundstage I prefer. When I capped the backs first, things improved significantly….suddenly i could perceive things individually in the listening triangle…….and because of the somewhat wide baffle, no need for a BSC circuit to my ear. In the small sealed boxes now, it’s even better but a bit congested when it gets loud….a combination of power compression and reflections within the box I assume. My next move will be an MT 2 way instead of a FR driver…..something along the lines of the LS5. What I’m trying to say I suppose is I’m not a fan of OB top end……on content with deep panning and cross faded to left and right, the ping pong is just too much…….sounds like an artificial surround algorithm to my ears.
Ripole subs can go lower without loosing the OB sound, but they need extensive filtering at the top end to tame the resonances they create and are limited in bandwith. But when done right they are much better than a plain OB woofer, even in a H-frame or a dipole woofer i think.

What sub drivers are they, Mayhem? I have a pair of freebie 15's with Fs20.8 , 12mm xmax, and a qts close to that, but I can't remember off of the top of my head. I want to try them in a H-frame just to play with. I've never had any open baffle or dipole myself, but listening to a very fine quad 15 system years back is a sound that I've never forgotten. I wish that I could remember what they were. I've never heard acoustic guitar float through the space like the big OBs did. Amazing and eerie at the same time. Glenn.
I gave that a try and the soundstage was too complex i felt……… now it could be my crude implementation and I may revisit it based on your recommendation and others.
