Looking for something to put on the kitchen table to protect it while working. Not metal or wood. Some sort of plastic something I guess? Or a large rubber cutting mat? I have no idea - any suggestions?
Old car floor mat ?

I'd rather not do carpet - easy to "lose" tiny stuff in it.
I've used several layers of corrugated box board...what are you working on?

Putting together an amp chassis, doing soldering, building miniature models. Really anything.
Rubber is great.
Plastic can´t stand the occasional solder drop and even worse, rare but possible soldering iron contact by accident.
Search for antistatic rubber, which is specially made for electronics lab use.
For a cheap disposable version, large ´piece of thick cardboard, think a fridge packing case or similar will do fine.
Avoid flimsy corrugated paper sold in rolls, moves/folds all over the place, you want somewhat stable surface.
