What is this used for?
It has the look & feel of a vintage oil filled capacitor.
It appears to have an input side, and a separate output side.
Is it a capacitor, or a transformer?
What would it be used for?

Looks to be an old high voltage (HV) power supply module.
Likely used in industrial processes, e.g., for high voltage testing.
There will now be more sophisticated modern equivalents.

Likely early 60s vintage, or even earlier. Note the postal code "New Haven 4", pre-zip codes. Zip codes were introduced in 1963. 118 VAC input, 2000 VDC output power supply. Careful!
Use dmm (digital multi meter) or any ohm meter to find out. Its easy 🙂What is this used for?

Seems to be a long history and still around, now (or recently?) in Florida.

Started in Chicago. Bought by the New Haven clock interests.
Curious what rectifier the DC supply used in that era.
It's a niche business and hasn't left much imprint on the sands of time.

Maybe avoid cracking it open. Oil filled cans were a convenient place to store that leftover PCB.
