Hoping for advice.
I have a Dual CS 415 - 2 Turntable fitted with an original DMS 251 S (MM) Cartridge.
I'm unaware of its history.
How can I tell if the stylus has seen better days?
Is there an affordable recommended universal stylus replacement and/or a Cartridge/Stylus replacement?
thanks Cliff

This is a modern entry level turntable.
You can't tell the stylus condition without access to a powerful microscope.
It's always best to replace the stylus if its condition is unknown.
A replacement stylus is easily available, e.g., https://shop.mantra-audio.co.uk/acatalog/Dual-CS415-2-Stylus-Ref-230E-MA0477-3.html

The Dual DMS 251 S cartridge is described here:

Thanks Galu.I further read that the DMS 251 S is a renamed Audio Technica AT91, which tracks at 2 gram (2.5 gram maximum).
If less expensive, should I go for the AT91?
Any replacement cart should be of the same weight as the original so as not to mess with the preset tracking force of this particular turntable.
The AT91 would appear to fit the bill, but heed the following advice.
If you fit an AT91, use your stylus balance to check that the tracking force lies in the range 2.0 to 2.5g. If it turns out to be less than 2.0g (unlikely), you can always add some weight (Blu Tack?) to the interior of the headshell.

Thanks Galu.I read that, being an OEM version of the AT91 cartridge, the Dual is compatible with both the ATN91 and ATN91R replacement styli - so no need to replace the entire cartridge.
Is there a trick to removing the stylus body from the cartridge?
I've tried sliding it off but no luck.
I've also loosened the screws which hold the cartridge on the tone arm to make sure these didn't impede removal.
Thanks.
Grip the stylus assembly by the sides and pull it down at the same time as rotating it backwards.
When removed, you'll see that there's a little 'hook' at the rear of the stylus that you must first engage with the cartridge body when refitting the replacement in the reverse order of the above.
Tighten the screws first!

Stylus removal is shown in diagram D of the AT91 manual:

I followed your instructions and it came off straight away.
Downward tilt made all the difference. 👍
