B&W 640 Speaker upgrades

I saw Jimbones had B&W 640's and can't find the thread. Any recommendations on upgrading this speaker? Is it possibe to plug up the port coming out of the back of the speaker and put one in the front bottom in an effort to be able to be closer to a wall and sound good. My wife is demanding it be by the wall or fairly close

Presuming Steve knows how to measure impedance, Allen, perhaps you could explain what he should be looking for?

I'd certainly be interested in more information regarding the procedure - sometimes you experts assume too much! 😉

Since you ask, you'd be looking for the distance that begins to introduce differences. Of course you'll hear differences as you go closer to a wall but some will be modal, and some will be port related (and possibly a combination). The measurements will help to keep this in perspective. What you'll do then is decide how much of a difference is significant, and whether you can compensate by modifying the existing rear port.

So, you are suggesting Steve measures to see if mounting close to the wall while retaining the port in the rear makes any significant difference to the impedance plot - if it doesn't then he doesn't have to relocate the port to the front?

P.S. "prot related" - is that a typo?

To make things easier for you, there is a rule of thumb that says the minimum distance of the rear of the speaker from the wall should equal the diameter of the port.

I hope this is helpful.
