I'm a fan of these beefy radios. I've discovered that the woofers frequently fail at even moderate volume when playing bass notes. Maybe age, maybe abuse?
The speakers crack up and distort. Cones look OK and reproduce fine at low volume.
Is there any repair?
I'm looking for a drop-in replacement on Parts Express, etc. Their customer service said very unlikely and suggest I go thru their options and modify mounting holes, etc. as needed.
Any experience on this forum?

Please disregard my post. I'm pretty sure the distortion comes from electronics not the driver.
I don't troubleshoot much and my work bench is a mess. So apparently is my logical ability. I've bn substituting speakers, connectors, sources, source material, amps, etc. all to confirm my woofer is bad. Troubleshooting can be challenging (for me).
Wrong assumption. And Rayma tells me he's had Proton problems w/ dirty pots, connectors, etc. No bad woofers.
I think he's correct so at least I'll start with de-oxit type stuff and a careful look at mechanical/electrical connections.
Thanks,

Test the signal going into the speaker(s). Even you can't inject a signal into the amp, you can still eyeball (oscilloscope app) if the drive signal into the speaker(s) is getting mangled on the peaks. Or you can take the signal and use to drive your HiFi and thereby learn how clean it is. Be sure the radio power supply has a transformer so you won't be shocked.
If you find the drive signal is OK at lower loudness levels, possibly you can find a more efficient speaker replacement. Or, pretty simple to add an externally powered speaker system.

Thanks. For as good as these table radios sound, they are miserable devices to work on.
There is a service manual way worth getting but not all examples adhere to the schematic.
One radio had two small 2 sq cm circuit boards attached with zip-ties to a larger board. ¿Original? Don't know.
That's why I am . . .

You oughta try working on the Boston Acoustics Recepter clock radios..... cute, compact, amazing impressive audio quality.Thanks. For as good as these table radios sound, they are miserable devices to work on.

And packed solid with boards, transformer, parts... etc.
They are murder to work on.
I had 2 of them, gave one to my neighbor, the other's on my service bench for tunes.
