Hey!
I am quite new to the speaker building community but I wanted to take on a challenge. I am looking to build a pair of cabinets similar to the old Altec Lansing 612 cabinets, they are going to be ported and I want them to use an 8 inch driver (or something within that ball park). The drivers are going to be powered by a TinySine TSA7500 Class D amplifier (or anything similar, I have been playing around with the idea of using TinySine TSA3118B(TWS/Apt-X) amplifiers to get true wireless stereo as well.
What I am now looking for is a full range (or maybe a coaxial) driver that is preferably 8 inch, but I could go down to 6.5 inch as well. I recently visited a store that was using the Seas T18RE/XFCTV2 and I really liked the sound of them but they are a bit out of my budget. I am mainly looking for something under $100/driver, but worst case scenario I could go up to $150/driver. It doesn't have to be the most high end speaker, but I would like a good bass and decent high end. Do you guys have any advice?

The SBacoustics 8" full range is $59. Cheap and cheerful, sounds great for the money, upgrade later if desired.
It depends on how big it should be. But a Mark Audio CHR120 or CHN110 should be on top of your list i think. The CHR120 can work well in a 50L reflex, the Altec 612 is about 180L so you will have to scale it down.
If you want to build it on scale, i would take a bigger driver like the Fane Sovereign 12-250TC (that also fits your budget). I did build a reflex cabinet for that Fane and mine is 175L tuned to 30Hz (only working like that on low power (<20w), so more in the region of the original 612 cabinet. I made it taller and less wide altough.

Okay cool I'll check them out. I'm thinking around 40-45L so the Mark Audio's would be fine. Are the CHR120 or CHN110 to prefer? It depends on how big it should be. similar to the old Altec Lansing 612 cabinets
Mark Audio CHN-110, Fostex FF165wk (cab will be uch smaller) or SEAS FA22 (needs pahase plugs).

These plugs work, some notches need to be added to clear the non-flat bits of the top of the pole-piece.

Sorry to take this post in a different direction, but briefly: Dave, do you have the measurements for other phase plugs available to the public?
Thanks,
Mike

Do you think they would perform better than for example Visaton BG20?The SBacoustics 8" full range is $59. Cheap and cheerful, sounds great for the money, upgrade later if desired.

Hmm, it's ~6.5 ft^3 net/~42 Hz Fb, so way too big for most (all?) 8", so do you mean a ~scaled 612, which will mean a (much) higher Fb or one that just looks something like one at a glance, though vent might not? Going with a smaller driver will likely just make it worse vent wise.
Sheesh! I keep getting caught out with these compressed threads!

daye.audio,
I recently built a set of XRK-971's Nautaloss speakers using PEs 299-609 6 1/2" mid-bass woofer and a GRS 1TM-4, and I love the sound. The woofer was only $7.98, and the tweeter $3.98. I have solid bass down into the high 30's.

Scale the depth of the enclosure down….keep the baffle large to eliminate the need for BSC. Tune 1 cuft to around 40hz and call it done.
