10" woofer suggestions - Heathkit ASX-1383

Hello all, sorry if this is in the wrong section. When I was a kid my dad had a pair of Heathkit ASX-1383. Amazing speakers. Been on the hunt to find them. A few weeks ago I finally found a pair, in rough shape.

The woofers are not original and are crappy. The mids work but the surrounds need replaced, and the tweeters are getting absolutely nothing. I found a manual on that auction site and have been reading up, but I've never done a repair before and am having trouble figuring out what to get. I have new tweeters on the way and found mid surrounds, but the woofers are baffling to me.

They are Heathkit part 401-199. After doing some research, I believe they were made by Carbonneau, but I'm not sure.

Here are the specs:
10"
cone 7.5"
magnet weight 32oz
Material Ferrite
voice coil 1.75"
enclosure Sealed B2 alignment at 45hz
usable response up to 2kHz

amp power 10-200w
phase response +- 45 degrees 100hz to 10kHz
crossover 750 Hz, 6db/octave
enclosure 1.8 cubic
8 ohm nom., 5.5 minimum

Anybody have any recommendations on what to get? Thanks in advance!

I guess there will be some recommendations for drivers along the way soon,

Sometimes what causes the first problem is that actual dimensions. So it would be useful to understand the actual dimensions of the old driver along with the cabinet cut-out, Is it front mounted rear mounted recessed, cushion shaped or circular driver.

If you have found an efficiency figure that will help, also what else does it have with a 1st order Xover at 750 Hertz. you mention midrange and tweeter but the specs you have posted only have one Xover frequency

With this info it should be a bit easier.

Finding a woofer that works in a sealed box of 1.8 cubic ft. should be achievable but it may come from a professional or car audio type driver.

Not my image, but here it is. It's 9 5/8" diameter from each mount hole. Sealed environment, the book says 1.8 cubic. As you can see, it's mounted in phase linear fashion.

This is the back of an original driver, marked 401-199.

Other crossover is at 4000 hz, 6db/octave. I can't find anything about efficiency.

I marveled at those in the Heathkit showroom on many occasions as a kid. If you are looking to replace the woofer you will want to be able to model the performance of a replacement. Down load a copy of WinISD free software and try some different 10" woofers in a 1.8 cuft sealed box. Parts express or Madisound have woofer parameters on the website that you can type into WinISD and see what you get. You will want to match the SPL and in box low frequency resonance of the original. You might find a woofer with parameters close enough to work. Other wise you are into designing a new crossover for the woofer at a minimum. The woofer in the picture doesn't look bad. Does it have poor measured performance or bad sound? Parts express lets you filter woofers based on sealed box volume. Looks like this would work. https://www.parts-express.com/Goldwood-GW-210-8-10-OEM-Woofer-8-Ohm-290-325

Seen another thread which listed the EIA number
719924
and Speaker Model 401-199

719 is EIA number for Carbonneau

The speaker model being restored was for a Electro Voice home speaker
EV Interface CII

Dont know that would help finding efficiency

Thanks, I ended up buying these. I'll let you know how they work!

Thankyou for the pictures as it probably didn't make it to the UK.

I am guessing the midrange is a peerless K0 40 type so sensitivity maybe 88 or 89 dBs after the crossover components added. You may not have to adjust anything to match with with the new Goldwoods.

It might be useful if you could draw the crossover components and layout for future reference, for use by yourself and others.

$32 and the fact that people like them, looking at the Parts Express reviews has got to be a bargain.

Hello. I recently purchased a pair of Heathkit ASX-1383 speakers on a local on-line auction for $22.50. The woofer surrounds were completely rotten, so I ordered a new refoaming kit. But, in case they still don’t work properly, I researched and found a 10” woofer on Parts Express that you can drop into your speakers. Part number is: 292-410. Model is GRS 10PF-8. Recommended sealed enclosure is 1.87 cu. ft., which is as close as possible. F3 will be around 45Hz. Sensitivity is 87dB and power handling is: 110 watts nominal, 220 watts max. The great thing is that they’re only $16.49 each if you’re not looking to spend a ton of money. I hope that was helpful for you.

How do they sound with the new woofers? As it is summer time, you may not have made it that far.
I just won them on auction last Thursday and didn’t pick them up until Friday evening. I ordered the foam surrounds on Saturday morning through eBay and they’ll tentatively be in the mailbox tomorrow. Hopefully, sometime on Saturday I’ll be installing them. I’ll keep you posted, though. Thanks for your “welcome aboard” message. I just recently discovered this site and it seems pretty cool.

I actually have not ordered the new woofers yet. I ordered new foam surrounds and I should have them in the mail by Saturday at the latest. If they are functioning properly after re-foaming, I’ll hold off on buying the GRS woofers. The original woofers were holding on by about an inch of foam and they disintegrated when I touched them. For the money, GRS products are surprisingly of pretty good quality. I’ve been custom building loudspeakers for about 35 years (I’m 66 years old), so I have enough experience where I wouldn’t steer you wrong. Good luck and let me know how they sound!

noggin291, How did the new woofers work out?
Just letting you know that I re-foamed the woofers and I was pleasantly surprised by the sound quality. Very deep and rich bass response, however I’m not 100% sold on the sound of the Peerless sealed back paper cone midrange; it can be a little edgy on certain program material, primarily where horns are present. It has a rather honking sound when turned up a bit. Down the road, I may order a pair of Seas midranges and add a back chamber. Although Peerless made decent drivers, in my opinion they’re not a true “high end” driver. I guess I’m a little too analytical at times.

Actually, the low frequency response from the original catalog reads: 40 Hz (-3dB) , 30 Hz (-10dB). Sensitivity is 90 dB. Crossover points are 750Hz and 4000Hz with a 1st. order crossover.
