Hello to all,
as the title states, I have a nice pair of homemade EV Baronet cabinets that I purchased without speakers. I have been looking for something that would be appropriate in an 8" full range speaker perhaps eventually going for a tweeter if needed. These won't be for critical listening, more as a nice sounding speaker that can play in the background.
I have a few requirements: first off, the amp that will be powering these isn't particularly powerful (a 15 watt Dynaco) so efficiency is important. Second, as I live in Europe, some of the US offerings are off-limits due to cost of shipping and hassle. Lastly, cost should be reasonable: if €300/speaker is necessary for a decent result, I can accept it, but any more and the fun of the project is gone. I am a little wary of buying used speakers, but from what I have read, they are more often recommended over newer offerings for this enclosure.
I am completely lost in speaker world sadly; all talk of parameters are pretty much over my head at this point.
These speakers will be used in their intended role as corner horns and I can accept some lack of wide band frequency response-- after all, there are no miracle single drivers that can cover everything from 20Hz-20KHz!
Any and all suggestions are more than welcome, thank you for your help!

ah thank you, there is a pair available in very good used condition in my price range. Is there anything I should look out for with this speaker? Do you think it will play nicely enough without any filtering? At a glance, the Fostex FE207E appears to be a drop-in, but NLA. 🙁
You're welcome! Well, it was designed back when recordings were very LF limited, so need to 'respect' the FE's very limited Xmax as cab tuning is ~50 Hz IIRC in a proper corner, so higher out in the open. Systems were typically medium/high output impedance with variable DF tone controls.
Frankly, all I really remember clearly is that my glue blocked together industrial corrugated cardboard replicas worked well with the '50s, early '60s drivers 'rescued' from all the mono console 'curb queens' (garbage pickup) to my teenage ears and the damaged hearing WW I, II, Korean war vet's and/or the (then) insanely loud manufacturing plant's and/or steam locomotive worker's I grew up with to better hear their AM/FM radio and/or hot wired to the TV to be a higher volume, SQ speech BW speaker.
Ditto Patrician replicas for the precious few 15" 'freebies' I found.

If FE207e works, FF225wk is probably close as well. You would need to add tweeters. FT17, the Foster that RS sold as an add-on are decent cheapish ones.

The Betsy K is interesting but is unfortunately only available in the US. I was hoping to find a new speaker that would fit into this application but I don't really understand or know which parameters fit a corner horn like the Baronet.
The FT17 is still available and looks like a crossover around 5k would be in order (if I am remembering correctly that crossover frequency should be at least double that of the resonant)
Is this needed only with an FF225wk or do you recommend a tweeter for the FE207 as well?

Is this basically a corner reflex? tuned around 50 hz
Visaton should be easily available in you region.
Something as simple as a BG20-8

Thank you for the suggestions, I saw an earlier thread about the SB Acoustics driver and wondered if that would be a good fit. The frequency range has quite a hole around 8k on axis, but I could always add a tweeter below this point.Sica 8D1.5CS

The Sica being 4 Ohm is unfortunately more difficult for the Dynaco to drive as it only has taps for 8 and 16 Ohms.
Thank you, that is certainly a bargain option! I don't know enough to really look at the parameters to see how this will work however. It appears that a tweeter would be needed here as well?Is this basically a corner reflex? tuned around 50 hz

Hole at 8 kHz is very narrow and almost completely disappears off-axis. There is no need for a tweeter.Thank you for the suggestions, I saw an earlier thread about the SB Acoustics driver and wondered if that would be a good fit. Tweeter is mandatory for Visaton BG-20.Thank you, that is certainly a bargain option! I don't know enough to really look at the parameters to see how this will work however. It appears that a tweeter would be needed here as well?
SB Acosutics SB20FRPC30-8 is much better than Visaton BG-20 and don't need a tweeter.
Thank you for the help. The SB Acoustics is indeed very interesting and inexpensive in comparison to other offerings. I will give it a try and hope for the best!Tweeter is mandatory for Visaton BG-20.

FE207e has top end, but really benefits from adding phase plugs.

You did corrugated cardboard Patricians? As in corner horn Patricians? 🙂Ditto Patrician replicas for the precious few 15" 'freebies' I found.

Correct. Driven with the typical (cheap/free) very high QT (weak) motor drivers it worked way beyond my then juvenile/ignorant expectations for all the various corrugated cardboard speakers I did, though didn't know why till much later that the cab was acting as a serious mid bass damper, smoothing out its response over its entire (point source) BW up to the driver's VC size.
Again though, all these were made from used industrial/international freight construction (1/4 - 3/8" thick IIRC) and ~ a decade later after recycling had become a 'thing' I switched to international motorcycle Styrofoam containers thanks to being almost within walking distance to the South's then largest Honda distributor/dealership that paid me to take them at a percentage of their collection cost otherwise till recycling of it began, ending my part-time DIY 'el cheapo' speaker building 'career'.
PS: Turned out I was hardly alone, one of the first DIY write-ups with a picture when I got online in '96 was a cardboard Patrician made from three typical (weak) cardboard boxes packing tape'd together to get the height!

I had some pretty big cardboard tractrix horns once, sounder better than expected. I am grinding away on an adaptation of the Voigt Home Constructor's Horn, for my 15" Fane fullrange drivers. I want to do a proof of concept out of corrugated cardboard first. I have a nice source, a local design company that offers temporary furniture made from cardboard.
I'm looking at upscaling to a roughly 50 Hz tractrix cornerhorn, with a matched throat and a rearchamber. Along with room gain, Hornresp suggests plenty of bass extension. I just wonder how the midrange is going to sound and if any treble finds the exit...

If I followed the sketch, pics online, the bass horn section has enough Vb, path length to attenuate any HF, though some mids might, but my SWAG is it's probably down enough dB from the front horn to be moot.
No, it hasn't been online yet. I am actually still a little undecided about either truncating the original design (circa 60 Hz) or going a little larger. I know the original has the best potential, but it gets awfully short after truncating. I think I also unconsciously expect this project to fail and hope to end up with half decent corner bass horns.
On second thought, it would be a shame not to try to recreate the original Voigt size first.
