Hi all,
WIth the obsolescense of just about all magnetic tape recording equipment I am hoping some fine person will agree to part with the SWFA Wow & Flutter board from their AP System Two. I appreciate any and all leads!
Cheers,
Howie

I posted a similar Q here a while back: https://www.diyaudio.com/community/threads/sys-2722-w-f-option.371585/#post-6653290
WFGUI will do everything you need - and it's free. But if you, like me, have an AP 2*** sitting around, then I guess it'd be a nice option to have. The last reply in the thread is someone who renovates APs and is an authority on them.

Thanks for the reply! I am unable to get WFGUI running on my new bench Win11 pc...and even much older AP software is running well on it, so go figure!

And YIKES! $1200 for the SWFA board? Everything is pushing me towards using my RME ADI2-Pro fs + LA Autoranger with Virtins software.
At least it would clear a WHOLE bunch of test bench space!

At least AP saw fit to offer a W+F option. Other AAs such as R+S UPV and Prism Dscope (of a similar vintage to the 2700 series, maybe a couple of years later) didn't even bother to offer options for analogue tape! Tape machines were in the dustbin in their eyes by that point.
Right! As someone who was an engineer in a large cassette plant we saw the writing on the wall in 1990 when we began to build an optical disc plant. The ST1510A W&F facility was/is excellent, showing spectra so you can pinpoint rotating members with issues. Ahhh audio archaeology!
Cheers!

The W&F option for System Two family is not an option today. I have not seen any W&F modules after I left AP. I have told many of my clients to buy and old W&F meter (Ebay) and connect it to the MONITOR OUTPUT of the AP.

Hi Duke!
Thanks for the info, I am currently using the program WFGUI. to check Wow & Flutter. It uses the audio device xtal for a timebase, so I don't necessarily trust the absolute speed accuracy, I use an Agilent freq counter for that. The program's author Alex Freed looks to have done his homework when coding it, the W&F figures are believable and in close agreement with my ST1510A.
To Bill: Hey, that ST1510A is the ideal device for testing tape recorders!!! If I found a program that came with a menu of modules that emulated the ST1510A I'd pay a lot for it! I am still doing recorders for radio and studios...but I hear ya, it has 40 years of use on it now....and last time I turned it on it came up dead, I replaced a shorted tantalum on one board, and it is back in service, but for how long?
My only hesitation regarding going whole-hog with the RME+LA-AR is the single channel AR. That makes it more difficult to do things like differential phase, or as we call it in the magnetic recorder biz Azimuth, but it is also needed for speaker system impedance work...I spoke with Jan about that and may end up getting another one to have a stereo pair.
Cheers,
Howie
