New OB project with Faital Pro 8" coax and 18"

I sold my house and won't probably have a dedicated hifi/TV room ever again. So I will build new speakers for the living room.

My latest effort was a two way OB (planar+15") plus IB subwoofer. See picture.

Planar combo was very clean sounding, but it was also a bit too polite at low volume.

I recently bought a pair of Faitalpro 8hx150 at a great price.

I plan a 3 way with OB coax on top supported by an H frame 18fh500 at bottom. DSP xo at 1700 and 160hz.

I already made a quick test with naked coax supported by a 15" and it was very promising. There was no ringing or harshness when the Tweeter was EQed and gain adjusted. Compared to planar combo, this setup has more dynamics, realism and body. It was a short test period, but to my surprise, I did not miss the dipole upper mid and treble. We will see how it goes once the build is complete.

Comments welcome on design and driver selection.

I've used the 8HX200 as part of an active 3 way in my previous surrounds and thought they were great. I'm moving and disassembled them and may just go back to 2.1.

The 18FH510 I like a lot and have used it in a FRFR MI cab (3 way) and really liked it. It's also a strong possibility for a large 4 way I'm designing for a friend.

I thought I knew everything audio 😀 what on earth is a frfrmi cab Brett?!!

The sight of PA speakers and CDs were enough to start me search for an escape route... I blame them for my hearing loss and tinniti (yes I indeed have two).

But with modern DSP, CDs deserve a second look by sensitive types like me (metal diaphragms still scare the shite out of me though).

I was experimenting with my Neo8S, and every time I took the XO point lower the audio image got better and better. It was like photographic equivalent of zooming and finer focusing at the same time.

Those were the reasons I wanted to try PA coaxials.

Full range flat response musical instrument. These are designed to be flat and clean in contrast to a typical MI cab that has a tonality 'baked in' to allow them to work better with modern modelling tools that allow you to emulate many amps, cabs and FX in a simple (electronics) box.

Anything too loud will cause hearing loss, so I'm not sure why you're blaming PAs and CDs. I would bet if you didn't know anything about my systems and heard them without seeing them, you'd have no idea they used CDs. Until it got so loud and was still clean that almost all domes and ribbons would be toast.
