Cut the cable. There's a shielded audio circuit and an unshielded pair to start/stop the machine. Splice a 1/4" plug on the shielded circuit and call it audio. Ignore the unshielded pair.
EDIT: Ya know, you could just use a 1/8"-1/4" headphone adapter. The extra contact does nothing.
