An old Vector Research. Not much. but is what i have. It Has an 8" down facing driver in a 20 x 13 x 5 inch tall enclosure with 2 cardboard ports on one end. The specs call it a Linear Compliance Woofer with specs of 6 ohms ,90 db, 28 Hz-150 Hz. 25 Watts Min 125 Watts Max. The wiring is set with both channels going into the inputs and outputs going to two satellite speakers.
I want to just use it as a sub and was hoping to just put in a simple crossover and new inputs, but open to ideas. Or should i just wire direct. I have only made one speaker kit so far and hoping to keep it k.i.s.s.
What say ye?

No problem to use it as a sub as-is, without anything connected to the satellite outputs. According to the rear label, the internal crossover sends signals below 150 Hz to the woofer and a above to the satellites, if present. That is a typical crossover point which should be OK for most listening. The woofer is a dual voice coil type with one coil used for each channel so the L and R bass are acoustically mixed by the speaker but kept electrically separate. Need to feed it both channels for best sound.
Gotcha. The two sets of leads indicate the dual voice coil. Driving with an older Onkyo AVR. Should hook it up to the two rear speakers. If it was single voice coil, i could have just hooked it up to the one center speaker. Guess this my learning something new everyday lesson.

Well now i am more confused (and feel older)than ever🙄
Hooked it up to the rear speakers and get no sound. Hooked it up to the fronts and it worked, but sounded like **** like you might expect. I have had this Onkyo for over 30 years and have only used the fronts. Was going to use this sub as a guinea pig.

Unless it's connected to an output that has independent level control, it will be difficult to balance the sound level with the other speakers.
Your AVR will have a large and small setting for the fronts so make sure it’s set to large. The other route is to get a plate amp and use your sub out jack. That’s really the best way for the reason techtool mentioned.
Thanks for the help guys.I hooked up an old Infinity bookshelf to one of the rears and set the amp to surround and it drove it lightly. but with a lot of clipping and crackling. The old amp had this sound with the mains about a year ago. Took the lid off, took a leaf blower to it and some contact cleaner on the volume knob. It has worked fine since. Maybe this is another sign that the amp is failing(?) Oh yeah, i also hooked the infinity to the center channel and it played fine in surround mode
Time to upgrade? Looking at an Integra 2 channel DTM 7 or a Cambridge AXR 100
