Hello,
I am new here, so my apologies if this is in the wrong area. I have a Sony Stereo system from 1990 that I am trying to restore, the CD player a Sony CDP-C201 is giving me some trouble. It’s very intermittent where at times the laser housing will not lift to read the CD, when this occurs just lifting with my finger fixes the issue for the time being. I have applied Super Lube to the gears, but did not know if there is another lubrication area that I should be looking at? I’m pretty novice at this and don’t want to damage anything beyond repair.

That sounds very much like a slipping loading belt.
Edit... the service manual shows there are two belts. I think one will be for the loader and one for the tray mechanism.

I just ordered some belts, but don’t know if they are correct. The belt your speaking of has grooves, the ones on Amazon appear to be smooth
I would really need one in front of me to see. If the belt is toothed and locates in teeth in the cogs then it probably isn't slipping (you would hear it chatter) but smooth belts do slip.
You need to try and see what is stopping it load. It can only be something slipping or more rarely the motor shutting off before it should. Is the motor 'weak'? Try applying a little pressure to the spinning motor and see if it has enough torque.
