Magnetic Amplifier Designs in Audio

I just came across this article and I have to say I have never heard of magnetic amplifiers before. Were these types of designs ever used in amplifiers or other high end audio we see today? Considering this was used for military tech at the same time as the vacuum tube I would think there would be some audio maps made this way.

Magnetic amplifiers are also used as “variable reactors”. By using the DC windings to change the core’s saturation changes the inductance. Of course the other technique is to change taps on the windings.

Pretty important parts in AC power generation systems.

Mag amps as far as I know are still used to control electric arc furnaces.

Frequency response limited typically but if you want a megawatt or more of power!

MagAmps are fundamentally useless for direct audio amplification: they can only process AC signals, not the DC of the power supply rails.
There are workarounds, like modulating the ultrasonic AC with the audio and demodulating it at the speaker level, but it brings extreme complications and inefficiencies.
Just use a regular class D amp, they are now mature and relatively simple

The Carver "magnetic" amplifier seems to be a variable switching DC supply that follows the audio envelope, similar to the more recent Yamaha. The Yamaha uses two +/- buck regulators while the Carver used + and - rectifiers from a high frequency transformer.
The Carver "magnetic" amps were a novelty for a couple years, but soon disappeared, I think largely due to sound quality issues.

But seems like most of you are talking about core saturation devices, which create a ~variable inductor with a small ~DC control current. These were used in power supplies to vary the AC input to the rectifier. But the output (after rectifiers) is DC, not audio.

Ugh, but the magnetic amplifier is something much more complex, as you can see and know.
