output transformer and cap life span

lol, ok. so not something to be concerned about these days?

i did read that caps should be replaced every 20-30 years? is there a way to test them first?

trying to decide if i should keep a spare of them on hand but not sure if theyd just deteriorate without usage

Always-on power transformer life may be shorter. 50 years for the well-made, >5 years for $13 warts.

Every type of capacitor is different. Electrolytic rot is a solved problem, except constant downward price pressure means we have the same failures over and over. Properly sealed plastic caps ought to last centuries; not all do.

Why do you want to last forever?

If you use an amp heavily, an extra set of capacitors might make sense, if you use them within say 5 years.
All electrolytic capacitors degrade on the shelf, but can be restored to nominal specs if carefully reformed.
Don't worry about film capacitors or transformers though.

Yes electrolytics detoriate on the shelf, they detoriate the fastest after being in use for quite some time and than put on the shelf for a longer prriod. They actually last longer when keeping charged, so never buy used electrolytics to store as spare parts.
