Mounting plugs and switches on a wooden case

I'm planning a wooden case for an upcoming tube line stage build. I anticipate the thickness of the wood (~0.75") will create issues mounting plugs, switches, etc. I could certainly drill part way through the wood to create a thin point to mount the parts, or I could cut out a panel area and install a metal plate to hold the components. Is there a pro/con to either approach that I might not be thinking of?

It can be advantageous for building and future servicing if the plugs, switches, etc can be removed from the case without unsoldering.
If a point to point with everything bolted to chassis/case then might not matter.
If PCB then you can have the PCB on the bench with everything attached for building & testing.

A separate panel can be changed if you were to modify the build in future.
Sockets can be mounted to the front or the back (inside) of the panel as you see fit.
Or the panel could be mounted from the inside.
