Seas U22REX

Question: This is an 8 inch woofer that I rarely if ever have seen used as a woofer in commercial designs. However, I have seen this used as a lower mid in the Linkwitz 521. Is this driver not suitable as a woofer? better as a mid? Can anyone clarify? Thanks

@Davey you touched on exactly what I was thinking. The driver has 8mm of linear travel, with a max stated as 22mm. I have not attempted any designs with it but I usually look at commercial speakers for trends. If a driver is not being used out in the wild there can be many reasons. I can not remember seeing this being used.

That particular driver was spec'd with a shorter voice coil (for lower inductance) with the LX521 in mind. But, there's no law that says it can't be used in other applications. 🙂
I'm not sure how much to weight the decisions of commercial designers regarding drivers. They have other aspects to consider besides performance.
But, the shorter excursion would probably eliminate this driver from consideration for some typical, box commercial designs.

Dave.

Dave, I understand there are many considerations when it comes to driver choice. I suspect all else being equal cost is a major factor, some of these drivers can be expensive. The uber expensive brands can justify it because their customers demand it. I look at commercial designs to try to gain an understanding. It does not ultimately drive my decision.

I am using Seas U22REX woofers. I initially bought them as pure bass drivers to use below 140 Hz with a different top module, and they worked very well as bass drivers. However, I currently use horn/compression driver and cross the U22REX at 1kHz at 18dB slope via active crossover, and the midrange is surprisingly very nice, both weighty and fast.
The Curv cone is woven polypropylene and feels very different when touched/tapped from traditional heavier polypropylene drivers. Curv feels stiffer/lighter, less "dead" sounding.
