what disc drive should I get?

I have a few boxes of CDs to upload, it is worth paying a couple hundred dollars more for a drive like this Asus? https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/produc...6d1x-u-external-blu-ray-writer-black/10756372

Of course reliability is a consideration, as equally so is the sound. I'm after one that's accurate that adds the least amount of colouration. Can I get away with a $59 job or is it worth spending a couple hundred on one? Something like the Asus I linked back there perhaps?

You don't need a Blue Ray drive to rip audio CDs. A (much cheaper) DVD drive is more than adequate. I have a couple internal Blue Ray drives and a have not used them in years. Only use might be playing movies, but a BR player plus a DVD drive would be cheaper. Blue ray technology is soon forgotten.

This is the correct advice. Any decent/cheap DVD drive is fine. If you are super worried about the quality of the copy go with a lossless format like .aiff and for software use something like Exact Audio Copy or similar (there are a number of options for this).

DVD / CD drive may in fact be better than a Blu-Ray for reading CD media, as the optics only have to be optimized for two wavelengths (IR for CD, visible red for DVD) and not a third band for blu-ray.

software such as accuraterip, Exact Audio Copy, etc. has the ability to perform re-reads to help eliminate errors during the transfer process

Copy the CDs as the original files, mostly .wav, on to hard disk.
Then try the above programs to make different versions of the same CD. You can copy one CD from your collection to start with.

Then choose whatever suits your taste in music rendition.
And use that style (mp3, flac, Ogg Vorbis etc., different bit rates) to convert all the rest of your collection.
The usual advice about data retention and safety may be borne in mind.

Correct a DVD wrirer one kind that handles redbook CD as well. This laptop is a good streamer. Music sounds excellent through it. Plus it has 2TB of inboard storage. All of the CD's will get uploaded here, and a few movies. It also has an awesome graphics card, I just got it back today, with the UHD upgrade, I love the crispness of a fresh display. Its easy to notice the bump of resolution, I'm happy with the upgrade.

I thought it couldnt hurt to seek a few opinions with a drive. I have gone too cheap on a digital device in the past, it was like some of the content sounded gone or just very recresded in to the back ground, I really had to struggle to hear it there. It will miss a lot of the finer nuances that takes a good highly resolving system to hear on a CD.

I do some movie watching through it also. But I almost never play DVD and BluyRay, I have no ambition to. I stream 99.9% of my movies through a laptop. I better test Astroids 🙂

dBPoweramp website used to have a ranking of which cd drives were best for ripping. Not sure if they still have it. If you're interested, I used to have and may still have some drives that are on the list.

That could be helpful thanks rif. The laptop shown up there is doing quite excellent resolving The Wall on Spotify with its inboard DAC. I wasn't able to find specs for that. *High definition audio interface* is as much as they give you on the DELL site.

Setup has great SQ while and not being the slightest bit analytical, bass has excellent authentic slam, so far nothing in there that isn't welcome.

I'll try to get my butt over to the estore tonight, I haven't gotten on a drive yet. Due to working or being tired from work.
