12AU7 compressor?

I've build 12AX7 preamp with 12AU7 cathode output while back that I'm not using and was wondering if it's possible to convert it to simple compressor or limiter using these tubes. I'm not finding any schematics at all so I thought I'd ask if it's even possible and if not, why? Thanks

some information here: diyaudioprojects.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?t=2847

I have no idea how this works, so don't ask

The schematics are out there.

But.... WHY?? If you need a good compressor, $99 at the rock shop buys better than almost any tube compressor.

And using a specific tube just because you have a few is rarely a good decision.

FMR Audio's RNC is as nice as its name, and turns up under $150 at Reverb.com. Beeringer has a not-copy at $99 or less.

Back 20 years and more I messed with all types of gain controllers, including 12AU7 gain-cells, but after the party of 1999 it became clear: use a $3,999 tube limiter to impress clients, use a <$199 limiter to do good work. The $5 THAT chips truly blow-away all else, and clever programming makes them do tricks we could not do in the old days (not without severe maintainability trouble).

It's not that I need a compressor, I do have a couple. But I have a good tube dual channel preamp I've build but never use so I thought with some mods maybe it could be turned in to a comp or basic limiter. Something with character, little dirty sounding is always welcome in a studio. I've all ready build tube distortion preamp I use so having one with some compression as well might be very useful for drums. I 've tried using it as opto comp by adding SS circuit driving it but while it worked ok, it was just plain and not interesting. So I guess I should have said I'm looking for some compressed dirt, not totally clean.
Just a thought anyway.

Thanks. Yes that's what this forum is for, people who like to build stuff on their own, experiment, make something unique. I definitely get a much bigger thrill when I build something rather than buying it even if my stuff is only half as good.
