Have a friend with this unit. Works fine for an hour or so then the transport
goes screwy.
Apparently it uses a special transport made by Esoteric/TEAC and info/parts are "unobtainable".
Any suggestions?

Take a look at Teac/Esoteric P2 and P2s, manuals and possibly parts.

Are the KSS-151a rails oiled? Try to drop some drops of oil in the laser pickup rails.
