Just a thought, - are there any low priced lateral power FET's suitable for up to about 50 watts/8 ohm out there ?
Price is relative. 25$ for a MOSFET is expensive if you're used to buying typical IRF240...

Don't try to buy laterals from the usual auction sites, they are almost certainly verticals remarked
"low priced" and "lateral power FET's" don´t mix in the same phrase. 🙁
People say that but forget they don't have secondary breakdown, don't need thermal compensation of bias point, or heatsinked drivers, so the overall BOM figures are probably about the same as for BJTs (though not competing so well against verticals).
£3.74 each when buying ten or more doesn't seem ludicrous for niche devices.
I've bought several sets from Profusion BTW and not had any issues.
