Complaint : flashing red light after 10 minutes of play.
Trolling around internet I see vague mutterings of capacitor problems.
Have extracted SMPSU and tested electros with ESR meter, found none of
them spectacularly bad. Any ideas appreciated.

If this is an amplifier, the timing electrolytic capacitors in the protection circuit frequently cause protection circuit problems. This amp is over 15 years old, correct? The little caps go bad faster than the big ones usually. There is a smaller ratio of water to seal area. The caps in the smps do run hotter.
Note load supply caps in smps are usually low ESR variety. So they should read lower ESR than the table supplied with the peak meter. That table is for generic caps.
