Swap cdm 1 for cdm 0 in Philips CD 204

Hello guys, i have a very worn Philips CD 204, the machine has been heavily used, and the CDM 1 transport is very weak. I recapped the whole machine, but even after recap the machine will not play all CDs, and when i change tracks it always fails to change track and the CDM1 stops reading.

Ive read on the forums that this is due to a worn bearing on the CDM and there is not much that can be done.

I have a donor CDM 0 but i dont know what modifications are required for the CDM 0 to work propperly on the CD 204.

I know that some CD 204 came with CDM 0 so it should be possible.

Hello kaulagalvis, i've already checked every point of failure of the CDM 1. The laser itself is in very good shape, the RF is great. But it appears the bearings are just worn. Because it will give up when trying to read cds. Height and focus bias have been checked with a scope.

Also all caps of the whole machine have been replaced.

The C.D.M.-1 bearings never wear out. There is one supporting plastic (delrin?) screw at the bottom of the motor shaft that can be indented after long use. So the CD platter can sink down a bit. Then the vertical tracking will be off. You can measure the tracking error with an oscilloscope or multimeter at the beginning and at the end of a CD, and set it to zero (or best average) by turning the above mentioned plastic screw with a Torx key.
