External sound absorbant for OB speaker

I have built an open baffle floor standing speaker, that is going close to the wall behind. Because of this I want to absorb a lot of the rear radiation.. I have got a cobbled together collection of cushions and towels which sort of work.

Part of what I want to do is to put 1 to 2 inch thick absorbant panels on the rear of the baffle, the inside of the wings. I thought Rockwool, but there is a problem. I have bronchiectasis and anything that sheds particles is a nono. Which rules out glass fibre.too.

So, can anyone suggest something that would suit my needs. (I will probably use raw wool in the free air behind the speaker)

I used basotect plates with 10cm thickness for all sorts of absorbing purposes and think it should work for your speaker down to upper bass or so. See datasheet.
My speakers are only dipole up to ~1k so my description won't help you much.
They are cheap but probably not healthy and tend to lose some particles here and there. You can get them in wooden frames with acoustic cloth but DIY is worth it for sure.

Thank you for all your suggestions. There will be a solution there for me.

QUOTE=Davor D;6834143]You can wrap rockwool or fiberglass with several layers of speaker grill cloth or foam.
And there are more practical ways to absorb the rear radiation. Stuffed TL or aperiodic box.[/QUOTE]

I would rather not work at all with rockwool or fibreglass. The drivers, Monacor sp 205 have such a high qt that they only suit ob.

I think you should sure try it first with stuff you have in your household.
Absorbing higher frequencies should be easier; towards low frequencies it will get more difficult.

You would expect that the soundstage could collapse and the bass gets thinner and thinner going towards a wall.
Try and listen.
Maybe you have something to hang over some towels or clothes hanger.
If it works build some nice looking wooden frames filled with old t-shirts and socks or so ;-) Just google diy absorber.

The best in my experience is melamine sponge pads, aka miracle cleaning pads. Formerly, patented Basotect acoustic absorber pads by BASF.

Patent expired and you can now get a bag of 100 10cm x 6cm x 2 cm sponges for $7 from China. Shipping included.

It is made of nano structured reticulated melamine foam. Does not degrade eith age like polyurethane, flameproof, and extremely small voids.

I second the melamine sponges. Easiest to work with. You can find them in supermarkets if you don't want to wait the month of shipping!

Because of your lung conditions, I do not recommend working with fibers, nor asking someone else to do it for you since there may be residual fibers stuck to the outer housing.

Plus, with some creativity, you can stick and arrange the sponges on the wall in an artistic design to try to blend pleasingly in your listening space.

Actually, for the record 😉, an end loaded ~ 45.5 Hz Fp, ~ 94.4 L TQWT flattens its resonant peak, making it usable down to its Fs.

Thank you GM. Although the OB works very well subjectively, your suggestion is really interesting.(The only 2 designs I have come across for the driver are both OB). Could you please spell out what 45.5 Hz Fp 94.4 L means.. Thanks

You're welcome!

TQWT = tuned 1/4 WL TL [tapered pipe] and in this case it's inverse tapered from the big end where the driver is to the small end [vent/terminus], so think of it as a small BR with a large, long vent with its total net volume [Vb] = ~94.4 L except morphed into a pipe shape.

Fp = the pipe's tuning, same as Fb = BR tuning and Fc = sealed tuning and in this case it's tuned to a 1/4 WL of Fs = 91 Hz/2 = ~45.5 Hz, so the pipe is ~34400 cm_sec/4/45.5 Hz = ~189 cm long.
