I purchased these jentzen for a crossover and I found they are awfully light...uncomfortably so.
Shouldn't film caps with comparable voltage and capacitance should have comparable weight?
As anyone opened one of these to see what's inside?

Polypropylene has a density close to 1, aluminium 2.7, so the proportion of metal to film is going to make a huge difference in density between metallized and foil construction.
The clarity cap has about a 50% higher capacitance so there would be more material there.
Although I haven't heard of a capacitor maker doing it, it would be easy to imagine a manufacture purposely making theirs heavier to make it 'feel' like they are worth more.

John Snell,
LOL no.
Mark,
It's interesting that the jentzen seem to be built within a thin Al tube while the Clarity do not.
I have foil caps too, these are much heavier.

.The heavier one will have more bass while the lighter one will have more "air" and "sparkle". Where have you been?
🙂

Joking aside, it’s a good question. I would like to know too.
Indeed,
That was my point. When you break open fugazi transistors you find the chip is 1/4 the size of the real thing. I wouldn't be surprised to cut this sleeve open and find a tiny mkt cap inside!

Off spec capacitors sell by weight in China.... guess who gets those on line?
Check them somehow, if they are genuinely to spec.

Have you thought to actually determine the density from the weight and size? If it turns out less than about 0.9 you can be sure there's air in there!
The aluminum tubes do not spec well to all cap diameters, so there are standard tube sizes with smaller and larger caps inside. Jantzen's website actually talks about this.
Since ClarityCap are not made that way, it will likely be a denser package.

Mark,
the density calc is a good idea.
Wolf,
I will investigate that point. Good info.
BTW these caps are purchased from an authorized 'primo' dealer.
Intertechnik caps I purchased are HEAVY but they are foil and it makes sense.

Well according to jentzen website these are supposed to weigh 162 gm. My scale cannot be that far off or all my cakes would not taste as delicious. 🙂
The caps are supposed N2-filled so maybe different construction. Still this leaves me somewhat concerned...
