Killer dipole bass dirt cheap

I'm in this hobby for over 40 years and I am not easily imressed but this Ripol (dipole variant) is worth sharing with the comunity.
If you are a teen that needs PA level bass don't read any further, but if you want true to the signal authentic deep reaching bass this is for you.
I was searching really hard to find a 12" Speaker for about $30 with good enough specs to be used in a dipole bass speaker.
low and behold I found one that really does all I need it to do.
+-6mm cone travel with a high qts of about 0.6 and 33hz resonace.
Jensen JWS 300 CP 4110hf (Germany). AfaIk that ceap $20 Blaupunkt 12" raw speaker at Walmart is almost identical in specs.
I build 4 Ripol speakers with it and they perform excellent.
It is by far the best bass I had in my home yet. If I ever put up my horn system again it will only be paired with these dipoles. When my better half saw the four 12" speakers she thought oh please not another monster speaker in our tiny living room. After they where finished she actually likes them. At the moment I run them paired with my abused Karlsonators and they integrate perfectly.
The surface is sand poured on pva glue.

Nice, interesting finish. Why did you stack them? If you had them connected side by side you could get some force cancellation meaning the cabinets wouldn't vibrate or move so much, something I think it worthwhile considering the large excursions usually required by dipoles.

I stacked them only for looks. There are people who claim that the cancellation
effect is minimal.

Radian, did you find a full set of TSP or even measure them? I couldn't find anything. Q of 0.6 seems pretty low for that tiny magnet.

Is the +/- 6 mm linear travel or the mechanical limit of the suspension?

How about wind noise? Should be pretty quiet due to pole vent and vented spider.

Why this particular model? There are other cheap 12" drivers available. The same vendor has a Magnat branded model that is only a little more expensive but seems to have a more substantial motor.

Last not least, beware of fake shops. There seems to be one shop that has them for half the price (i.e. < €15) that uses the addresses jung-israel.org, stepsclu.com, stepsclubd.com.

I connected the speakers to a little mono amp, the two speakers on each side in series and
than paralleled both sides to arrive at 4 Ohm.
The cone travel ist as I already mentioned +- 6mm (forward 6mm backward 6mm).
I am in the hotel at the moment and don't have access to the TSP parameters.
They are not from me but done by some guy in a German forum as far as I remember.
These speakers are made for 3 different dealers Jensen, Mac Audio, and Magnat.
The TSP are really irrellevant at this point, all I can say is they work extremely well in the
Ripol enclosure. Years ago I build a Ripol with an 18" Fane Colossus XP and it works quite
well but needs about 6db high pass at 25 hz due to the low Qts.
These four speakers together cost a third of what the Colossus cost.
If I had not seen a close up of the magnet structure where I could see the coil through the
air holes of the frame I would not have bought them. What I saw was encouraging
because the overhang of the windings from the pole plate was big for such a cheap
speaker. That settled it for me to buy four for 104 Euro including shipping.

.

The stronger the motor the more eq you need.
This speaker has almost ideal TSP for the job at hand.
At the end its all about surface area times movement.
I know I will not get the spl level of some expensive speaker
like the 12" Seas models, but than again I get 4 for half
the price of one Seas. If I had a big room like I used to
I would stack 2x4 on each side.

Nice work Radian, good looking cabs!

What is the R156 circle from the dimensions picture of the cabinet? Is this merely the outer perimeter of the driver or is the hole of the driver routered for a flush installation of the driver?

Is the driver magnet sticking out the R91 cutout hole? Looks like maybe something is sticking out on the fabric from the pictures.

If this was built like a two driver cab mirrored cab, would you reduce panel thickness if you expected some vibration cancellation?

How high up in freq do they sound good?

At the moment I am only at home on weekends so I did not do any more than
dial them in by ear. I got a diy Dante 2 way system where I cross them over at about
100hz. Roland another Diy Audio bud in my town has more expensive Wavecore speakers
in those cabinets and he uses crossover points up to even 200hz with excellent results.
Disregard the first picture of the dimensions.
I used 22mm MDF..

The TSP parameters came from the Magnat CP 300 4110 I-DS which is a close variant
of the Jensen having a double roll suspension. It really dosen't matter much for me as
the Jensen sounds perfect in the Ripol.
If you put the speakers face to face you leave out the side walls so you have a 70 mm
middle opening.

Fs/Hz: 27
Ohm : 3.4
QMS : 6.0
QES : 0-64
Qts : 0.58
VAS/Ltr : 143
Xmax/mm : 6

I found another strong contender for this cabinet. It will go down to about 35Hz -3db, but with about 4db1w/1m more efficiency.
MCM 55-2982 from Farnell Germany
I bought 4 for €204 including shipping.
7mm xmax and about 0.7 qts. Tested by Amps-Lab.
These are more dynamic and therefore more suited for a high efficiency set up like my horns or coax speakers.
If you coat the cone with PVA glue you can lower FS if you desire lower bass for Movie duty but you loose a bit efficiency.

Build them guys you will not regret it.
