Slim GR dMar-Ken7 Ov9l build

Thinking of another Alpair -7MS gold 5" build. The last time I put 1/2" felt on each side of the brace. Was this really necessary? Or could I have done without it? What difference will there be in sound quality without the felt? See attached. The first I used the Alpair 7P which after breaking then in sound fantastic.

Also what does anyone think about the advice given by Mapleshade recording regarding speaker placement & design? Mapleshade recommends the use of brass screws to mount the speaker drivers to the baffle. Something about a reduction in transfer of vibration. He also recommends not to fully tighten the frame to the baffle as well. Take note about the internal wiring as well.

A: it is copper
B: it is a 4”

Damping the brace is optional, but if you do, the centre side is all thet needs it and it should be lower density than felt. And what we are damping is the air passing thru the holes. The damping on the brace is just for convienence you want to cover the holes.Something like poly batting/BAF or some thin fiberglass insulation.

The damping here is placed where it is most effective at damping the side-to-side standing wave. The air has to pass.

I often use brass screws. They are now-magnetic. Easy to turn the heads off if you try to tighten too much. Chris hated that. I said if the head comes off you have tightened too much — the scres on any driver should be only so tught that a real or imaginary washer is stopped from spinning.

Dave thanks

Madisound has the driver listed thus.....approx-5-fullrange/markaudio-alpair-7ms-gold-cone-5-full-range Potato potahto I guess it is all the same. The Alpair-7P is listed under the 4" drivers though the diameter is soo close the hole size is miniscule in difference. The color is ? I have not seen one in the flesh yet but photographs have rendered it gold colored. But hey my wife likes copper colors so if it really is more to the copper she will be happy as it will fit in with the copper accents that are in the house. in a cherry veneer cabinet it should look good.

Does the felt as I have it installed in the other speaker build really effect the sound as I have it now? how so? I can easily remove it if needed. I'll try the loose insulation on the next build.

I was counting on pre-drilling & tempering the drill holes with a steel screw before inserting the brass screws- an old woodworking technique.

Thanks again for your input & guidance...

A pet peave.

Yea, i know. I have complained to Madisound about the incorrect sizes (which they are doing because of the big bezels), and to Mark personally about the colour. There hans’t been gold since gen 1. Or Gray.

The copper was first seen in the first gen CHR-70 and was an attempt to get the colour the same as the copper phase plugs in the CSS SDX7. Mark got real close. That colour graduated into the Apairs in the A12 and A7. CHRs got champagne.

The colour choice in our ellipsa WAW was a tribute to that which i consider a brilliant move by Mark.

The colour and size thing is something i have to point out often. Maybe if enuff people start calling them how they should they will.

BTW: Pics of your CGRs?

CGRs here they are

3/8" cherry veneer on the front baffles, 1/4" cherry veneer top, back bottom & sides over 1/2" BBP, simple boiled linseed oil rubbed & burnished finish. The photos show them lighter than they are. They are darkening nicely. The 7MS to be started this fall will have the same veneer & finish, I might have some spalted cherry for the baffles. Sides are book matched. All corners, port & driver opening have a 3/8" round-over The port round-over was supposed to be flush but the router bit moved on me. A happy mistake because it looks cool Will try the same finish on the next.
