Hi all,
I'm looking to get a replacement laser for my cd player - and was wondering where you can get a genuine KSS-201a laser unit from. Most of the eBay ones look like knock offs.
So if anyone knows where you can find a real one - that would be awesome.
Cheers

Your chances of finding one are pretty slim tbh and if you did then expect to pay ten to twenty times the price of the generic replacements on offer now.
The genuine Sony part had (from memory) bronze bushes for the slides while the generic replacements are all plastic but beware, many show the genuine part and supply the generic.
Fwiw the generics are generally fine and we were fitting generics as long as 25 years ago.

Over the past year I replaced several KSS-240A, KSS-213A, and KSS-210A optical pickups with new generic pickups. In every case the new generic pickup performed better than any original OEM pickup which I have seen. The new pickups have textbook-perfect eye patterns. Their IOP (laser diode current) is about 20% less than old pickups. This suggests the laser diode may have a longer life expectancy. Mainly what I observe is that these new pickups don’t skip when the CD player is tapped on, or when there is a scratch or fingerprint on the disc. Original OEM pickups often have skipping problems even when they have a good eye pattern.
I’ve purchased generic optical pickups from eBay and Amazon.
The only problem I had was with a KSS-213A complete transport assembly (pickup, motors, disc spindle, and chassis). It wasn’t packed well and arrived broken and in pieces. The eBay seller gave me a full refund. I was able to use the sled drive motor and the optical pickup itself in other projects. The remainder was damaged beyond use.
To conclude, I recommend using currently available generic optical pickups. At prices from $11 to $25 USD you can’t go wrong with these.
