new leader tape shedding colour

bought the above from ebay- its making my capstan etc pink - i cleaned a bit with alchohol and q-tip and that turned pink- is this normal?

Not likely, and it certainly won't meet NAB standards. I'd worry about tape oxide damage as well.
It's a good thing that returns are accepted.

I think he means damage to the tape's oxide layer, because it would be travelling through a contaminated tape path and crap from the leader can be transferred back to the business side of the tape.
