My Eikonas have arrived!

These arrived a couple of days ago. I'll probably build several enclosures to find out which sound the best. First attempt will be the MiniLine TL boxes from the EJJ site. I should start on that in the morning, since I have the MDF already, but I'm still awaiting a couple of tools and a bag of dowels.

I gave them a short run today just sitting on the bench. Thijs Van Leer's flute never sounded so good!

@PJN This was a B pair (slightly used) from EJJ and they have already had about 35 hours running in. I spotted the sale in the last newsletter and jumped on them within 10 minutes. Colin was surprised. S/N 011 & 012.

Those are indeed good drivers, just overpriced compared to similar drivers of Mark Audio and EAD. But they do sound very good. I would more make an MLTL (like the Jordan Eikona 2 MLTL38 design on their website) with them (altough i would design them myself probally as that is half the fun of diy). Like that they can give more bass than you would expect from such a little driver. Have fun.

And on translam, it's waisting wood (and money) for me and the structure is not that solid as a normal construction. The advantage (and the only reason to use it) is to make irregular formed cabinets (which is almost impossible with normal techniques) but for the rest, don't do it.

Sure. However, they're not equivalents so that's not really relevant. I own eight Jordan 50 mm drivers (and already threw out four that were damaged) and have been listening to them since 1975. I've also heard the Jordan ASTEC drivers, and the JX150s.

I have two JX125NG, twenty-two JX125NG with EAD upgraded surrounds, two JX125NG OEM versions and there are another ten Jordan drivers (six J6T and two J51's) arriving this week. In my humble opinion Ted knocked it out of the park with this design, I've never heard anything close.

I've built my own systems my whole life, starting in 1967 at the age of 14 with valves. I decided that it was time to stop struggling to achieve a better system and get what I know will be satisfying to me. For some people that decision isn't easy to make, because money is always an object; if it weren't, I'd be building Eikona line source boxes! But I don't regret laying down the long green for these guys.

For those who really can't afford them, build yourself a set of electrostatics. I did, and was satisfied with them for about ten years.

I heared them side by side JX92, Eikona's, Mark Audio Alpair 10.3 and 7.3 and prefered the Mark Audio's, that were at that time half the price. But if you like it more, no problem. I think they are very close and Mark Audio advanced more than Jordan over time so they got better. Btw, Mark Fenlon was the designer of many of those Jordans (oa the JX92 i thought) in the past before he started his own brand so they are close related and very similar in build and design.

I use mine in a backloaded horn that I designed many moons ago using MJ Kings mathcad models for a pair of JX92s driver. The Eikonas sound even better in them, very clean and clear with deep bass reach. It is a fairly large and complicated build though, about 5 ft tall, 2 ft deep, 16" wide mouth, the details are on the Jordan website. I also built a pair of MLTLs designed by Paul Kittinger for the Eikonas that has a very similar look to the VTLs, much more reasonable size, and sound very nice, decent bass, but don't have the low end reach of the horns. I also have a pair of Markaudio SOTA 11Rs similar to the Pluvia 11's, it's a nice driver, but not in the same league, it would sound great as a wide band driver with a tweeter, it can't do the upper end as nicely on its own as the Eikonas.

Mark was the designer of the J6T, which I've got coming this week. I've never heard any of his speakers at all so really can't comment further on them. I've heard good things about his drivers though, and have considered getting hold of a pair of Alpair 5.3's for comparison.

OMG!! I'd love to hear those horns, I've always admired that design. I'm starting simple with the MiniLines but doubt they'll stay in those boxes for long, they deserve room to breathe. But I'm afraid if I do build the horns they'll have to go into a different room, there's not enough space in my Living Room for them.

Luckily I do have a 10,000 cu ft area that just needs tidying up. 🙂

The Taliesan mltl by Paul Kittinger is a fairly straightforward built and sounds very good. It also looks great with any decore. I could pm you the plans if you would like.

That would probably be a breach of Ars Harmonia's design copyright, and since he used Martin King's MathCad probably a breach of that licence as well. I do appreciate the offer though.

I'm not sure that they are still in business, I got my eikonas from them but I have been unable to find anything recent on the web, can't find their original website either. In any event you are probably right, I hadn't thought about that. Good luck with your build.
