When I was a kid the cat would bike the joystick cables and end your gaming fairly quick.
We resorted to wrapping the cables with plastic that may be thick and chewy enough to save the cable.

I've heard of mice nibbling on wire, too. Something in the insulation must taste good to the kitties.
I read that cats can find the oral sensation of chewing on cables pleasant. Kittens in particular can chew cables as part of their exploratory development.
However, this presents a choking hazard or even, dare I say, the possibility of electrocution. 😱
