NAD B326 popping sound repair

Hello there.

I have a NAD B326 integrated amplifier with some trouble.

Shortly after i turn on the amplifier, I start getting some poppings sound, from both speakers (at different times). They somehow seem to get louder the longer the amp is turned on. The sound occours independent on volume level and source.

One of the caps in the power supply has started denting on the top, so it might be this cap. Maybe some discharging? However, I would have expect same pops from same channels, if this was the case..

What can this be?

I presume you mean NAD C326BEE? This model seems to have a lot of problems with going into protect mode. One cause for this in other amplifiers is dry joints on the drive transistors. Your cracking sounds may be a precursor to the problem getting worse. Have a look with a magnifying glass at the soldering of the pins of Q140, Q141 (left channel power amp) and Q340, Q341 (right channel). Also look for any evidence of heat or dry joints generally on the power amp boards.

Your amp isn't going in to protect mode, yet, however there is another problem with protect mode addressed by a circuit modification in the service manual on page 18.

I opened the amplifier, but did not resolve the problem.

Honestly i was moving around that time, and the amplifier have been sitting in my basement since.

I will try again, and do some measurements. If you get any updated, please notify me.

All that I will say its only opinion of amateur, that owns NAD c326bee. Take this into account.

No matter what, this is a problem. As first step I would replace this cap and see if problem still appears.

Something that can help to understand if problem is in amp or preamp section - you can connect your speakers without preamp and see if problem still appears.
So, if problem is gone then its source is a preamp section.
If problem is not gone then it is in amp section.

To see if there is a heap problem there, open the back of amplifier (there is a plate there on the bottom with few screws to remove) and see if SMD covered blue board has strong yellow color.
