I'm looking to do a 2-way with active crossover (MiniDSP). They'll get paired with a SVS PB-16 Ultra sub. I'd like to just keep it cheap - let's just say, under $300 for the pair. Should be do-able, I'd think, since no crossovers are getting built.
I know (well, from research, anyway) that 2-ways aren't ideal for this, and there are limitations. So let's just see how well we can do, inside the limitations.
I'm not that knowledgeable, so please be gentle...

Look no further, here's a plan.
Denovo Audio Apollo-7 MTM
Just buy the drivers, set the xo at 1,500hz, 24db
Stand Back!

Whats the size of your theater? What’s the plan with center and rear? What amp? How loud do you plan to play and what’s your preference around WAF? What about a 8” or 10” coax? Loud and fun.

I think those might take a bit more power than I have on tap. Also, the kits are unavailable. Other than that, yeah, great suggestion.

Not really a true theater. Just front channels and a subwoofer, with no plans for center and rear. The room size is about 15' x 22'. My amps are TI TPA3255EVM Class D modules. (home built)
I don't know what "WAF" is, but I assume that has something to do with what a woman thinks about how it looks. Meh. Couldn't care less. 😉
I'm not sure how loud, but I don't have much of a preference towards anything, so long as it meets $ goals and sounds nice. This doesn't have to be an "ultimate of ultimates" kind of venture. It's kind of a nice experiment. Relaxing. Low budget. Rewarding. I just got a bunch of stuff that's sitting around, and my mind is bored.

I think it will be very hard to find anything better. There is also Mandolin project by Jeff Bagby available at Meniscus, both as MTM and TW. Both are well document and describes on the forums.I think I like this option a lot.
"It's all about the sound" - Especially when multi-amp DSP is available.
SB_Acoustics aluminum cone 6.5" midbass SB17NBAC35-4 and 1" dome tweeter SB26ADC-C000-4 get high praise for their detailed sound and reduced cone break-up thanks to a ribbed midbass cone.
Build a 1cuft empty-internal volume floor standing cabinet. Net volume ~ 0.7cuft after braces and drivers
--- Cabinet internal measurements ~ 8" wide x 6" deep x 36" high
--- Port = 1.5" diameter, 4" long, which can be located on front or side panel.
In the sealed 0.7cuft cabinet the SB17NBAC35-4 has a 70Hz -F3, which should blend well with your subwoofer.
In the ported 0.7cuft cabinet the SB17NBAC35-4 has a 40Hz -F3, which should produce enough bass for stand-alone usage.
Program your minidsp for LR4/LR4 crossover at 1,800Hz.
Troels Gravesen has example cabinet constructions on his site.

So you don’t care what it looks like in a medium sized living room. What’s your music reference? With a class D amp setup and DSP I think personally efficient PA speakers might be a good idea allowing a lot of modifications without loosing power handling.
Check out the eminence coaxials, they are lots of fun great value and super simple to make work. You may not even need a sub if you build them about 50l for the 10” but with a sub maybe the 8” in a 20l will be sufficient.
Coaxials have high efficient compression tweeter attached on the back of the magnet with a horn in the middle of the magnet pole. Eminence screw on solution allow you to select different types. A lot of people like this (including myself) other claim it’s a bit uneven response around the crossover area. For home theater should work great (point source).

I don't mind an ugly speaker, but I don't really need new furniture. Monkey Coffins are a no-go. (that's me, not the woman speaking) I don't want anything that would hold a small sedan.
My music reference for these speakers is irrelevant. I have a pair of ZRTs for that.
Solid7, these look great to me, and they have a good reputation.
SB, SB17NRX2C35-8
I really like these, but I think I bought the last pair
ER18RNX (H1456), 7” Reed/Pape

Baffle edge treatments which reduce distortion can also improve appearance.
Bevels or Rounds.... Saw or Router
Troels Illuminator66 breveled edges cabinet design is what I suggested in my earlier post.
The large radius half-circle-top baffle extending above the rectangle cabinet is a new idea for router lovers.
