Hi,
A bit of background to my question. In my country (India) Elektor stopped publishing about over a decade ago. I rarely missed my monthly copy of it and retained ones with audio amps by Ton Giesbert and T Giffard. And now other local electronic magazines too are hard to find at book stands. I prefer the printed copy over online.
But it looks like the printed versions will not be available as is the trend, there arent many buyers I guess 🙁. There are many sports, social, audio magazines that also ceased and are a thing of past now.
So whats my problem with online? For one there aren't many that I know and even if they are there today they will vanish tomorrow. It wont be wrong to say that printed copy of magazines last more than the online counterpart.
Since everything is turning online, please post list of online electronic magazines (audio or general), if any, preferably free.
Thanks and Regards,
WonderfulAudio

Silicon Chip Online
www.epemag.com PE Practical Electronics hobby constructor magazine.
Printed versions of those magazines are available too but you probably realise that nothing that is current is free and nobody works to publish new ideas and material for nothing. Free stuff is recycled from better times when more people actually paid for the content.

In the old days just about every young guy -repaired his own car/motorcycle -built his own electronic equipment-worked in an engineering factory-repaired everything in the home etc and then the world changed .
Engineering was out cooking was in manufacturing was closed down and hotels /restaurants etc opened -repair shops closed -3 years old ?- buy another one - spares ?-- your kidding aren't you .
I am about the only guy where I live that actually lifts the bonnet of his car to check the engine - yes they clean the insides but the rest -garage .
SMD-miniturisation -to small to repair - no screws glued together , I am also one of the few people where I live who owns a PC --all laptops , when I said I had two PC,s they didn't even understand what I was talking about .
Your country -India has engineering just about every street corner so has China but the UK its the service industry , no wonder electronic/engineering magazines disappeared along with places like Maplin in the UK .
I got asked what are those big dishes you have in your back garden are you spying on somebody ?--no I said they are large satellite dishes for picking up European satellite channels where --like Germany you get free up to date films/sport and --yes - engineering ( not banned there yet ) .
I feel like an alien in a strange land maybe been here too long .

I feel you on that one. I've built things and had people remark "thats stupid, why didnt you just buy one?"

Maplin are back but minus the electronic components.
Still as expensive though.
A lot of DIY type folk have a fascination with simple electronic designs and projects. Perhaps they're done with acquiring commercial products, following vast schematics with hundreds of components etc. and realise that amplifiers don't even need all the bells and whistles of MCU chips either.
Due to circumstances though, it may be that they can't build what they would like to try out or even source the parts. As we age, we may also have to give in to mobility and vision problems that can make it more of chore than a pleasure.
As to kits, the Chinese folk supply mountains of very affordable audio and general interest kits and PCBs, albeit with little documentation. It doesn't take a genius to overcome the hurdles though so why moan that your local suppliers are long gone? Their problem was that their kits were no longer competitive even with finished, warranted retail products and nobody likes forking out large sums for a lousy handful of cheap components and a PCB - not when you know their actual factory selling price.
All of us can at least read and dream though. That often seems to be enough for experienced folk to feel they are still sharing in this great activity.

Modern hobby electronics is getting harder.
Sometimes being forced into tiny SMD soldering.
Through hole components are getting hard to source as time goes on.
Having to use microcontrollers that are much more complicated than they used to be.
Companies like RS Components forcing to buy a pack rather than one off components makes it expensive.
Expensive local pcb makers make it restrictive. There are cheap Chinese suppliers but postage can become expensive.
I have many old Maplin project pdf's but a lot of the components for projects are now obsolete.
