New Monster PD driver 24603BR

This is a large PA "subwoofer", but what is the motivation for using such a driver "at home"?

Sd is around double of an 18" driver, so it's like two of them, but Xmax is "only" 16mm and Fs is "only" around 35 Hz. It's not a subwoofer as you would think of one for "home use". 1W SPL is 98dB, so it has some sensitivity going for it, I guess.

Why not just implement dual 18" subs instead?

Who said anything about using it at home?

I do agree, though, that a 2x18" cab would put out similar performance, but would be easier to move around.
I'm a little surprised at the AES power handling of only 1800w. Other manufacturers have managed that sort of thing with a 4-5" voice coil.

Bl^2/Re almost 300 in a 24" driver, I'm guessing the cone would fold in a horn though?
The ratio of Sd to MMS is just a bit higher on the PD-24603BR than other "monster" drivers that have proven to work well without "folding up like a taco" in horns, such as the B&C 21SW115 and 18SW115. Bl is quite impressive, almost 25% higher, but the PD-24603BR AES power rating of 1800 watts is not much more than the 1700 watt B&C drivers.

PD-24603BR Sd 2239 cm2, Mms 440g 2239/440=5.08
BC21SW115 Sd 1680 cm2, Mms 342.2g 1680/342.2=4.909
BC18SW115 Sd 1210 cm2, Mms 275g 1210/275=4.4

Given that the power ratings are so similar, if not overdriven, my guess would be the larger cone PD-24603BR could handle similar compression ratios to other stiff-cone drivers without folding problems.

Will be interesting to see how they hold up in the real world.

For a hint to the realworld, Precision Devices produced the 24" inch used in the then famous Turbosound subhorn TSW 124 ( 80s and on). PD as a company was actually started by Turbosound as producer for their PA speakers. Now they produce the 24" in the Funktion One F124. That driver has a double voice coil and a BL at 50 !! The man behind Funktion One, Tony Andrews was one of the guys behind Turbosounds birth in 1978.

Thanks for the backstory, Dreatings.
I'd seen Turbosound loaded with many different manufacturer driver options back in the 1980's, but was unaware that Precision Devices went that far back.

The PD-24603BR looks to be quite an upgrade from the PD-2450 used in the old Turbosound TSW 124.

Weltersys, you are right about Turbosound and their use of different manufacturer. ATC Fane, Beyma, PHL to mention some of them. Today is PD not a part of Turbosound, it is owned by the Barnes family as Fane also . It seems they share production facility both in UK and China. PD has totally renewed and upgraded its loudspeaker models last year . I think the older models were "well matured". Its a tough competition and "the Italians" are in front of the race it seems.

A bit of pro audio history pre "the big black bananas". When Turbosound was leader of the pack. The Guinness record PA - Glastonbury 85. 40 pieces of TSW 124 installed !
