Hi, all
Using a pair of Electro-Voice TS940D LX pro cinema speakers in my home set-up. They're the small horn variant with the HP940 horns, but I'm in the process of replacing them, within some two weeks, with the bigger HP9040 horn that also fits on the TL606DW bass cabs (and thus they're called TS9040D LX).
Do anyone here use the HP9040 horns or are otherwise familiar with their sound? How do they compare to other, similarly sized horns (or smaller, for that matter) like the JBL 2360 or earlier EV variants?
The compression driver used in my EV set-up, and that will be mounted to the HP9040's, is the DH1A.
Please chime in.

I have not used HP940 or HP9040, but there is a JBL technote that compares DH-1A/HP940 with 2380/2450 and 2352/2451 horn/driver combinations.
Technical Note, Volume 1, Number 21
Similarly, there is a comparison between HP9040 and JBL2360 horns:
Technical Notes Vol. 1, No. 17
Hope these help. However, remember that these are written from JBL's perspective.

Try to get the older HR9040 (white whale) if you can, a VERY good sounding horn!
I have not heard the HP9040, but it uses a diffraction slot if I'm not mistaken. I have a pair the HP940's somewhere. These also have a diffraction slot, and this is the reason I don't use them. The DH1A is definitely the best of the 'cheap' compression drivers I've tried! Like them more than any of the JBL's.

I've used the HP9040 in combination with a TAD 4001 for more than a decade.
They work really good in small rooms because of the good pattern control down to 250 Hz.
I used open cell foam in the the first part of the horn and damping on the side walls of the horn.

Well for small rooms and low SPLs, even the diffraction slot shouldn't be an issue. Yes, the horn, being really big, would hold its pattern deep into woofer territory.
Diffraction slots add a harshness to the sound that I don't care for. This has been the case with all diffraction horns I've heard no matter the size of the room or SPL. It's an 'artificial' way of increasing beamwidth in the high frequencies.
I have JBL's 2370 and 2380 models for experimental and testing purposes and to be honest, I'm not interested in incorporating them into a current design. However, since the JBL2360 (OP's comparison) also has a diffraction slot, I guess the OP should be alright with it.

I had an HP940 (or at least an EAW clone) and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by it's performance. You'd think it would sound bad with it's huge diffraction slot, but it sounded very nice.
Just goes to show how different tastes are, I don't like my HP940's at all 🙂
I find tractrix and JMLC horns to have far superior sound quality compared to these pro sound horns. But like I said earlier, the HR9040 is an exceptionally natural and good sounding horn. Considered by many to be Don Keele's best midrange horn design (he also designed JBL 2360 among many others).

Just in case the OP is interested in HR9040 instead, here is its comparison against the 2360 (as per JBL):
