Have bought one of these spares or repair, seller said it switched off after a period of time, not yet it hasent, it just has the jumps if tapped issue that i have had with sony kss 240 set ups before and never really managed to fix
other than replacement and that dosent always work either, so not looking to go in that direction with this player if possible, strangely somebody has stuck a felt type mat to the inside of the top cover and on a couple of places under the player, dont know what that is all about, actually its a rather decent player over all and to make possible progress i would need to see a service manual, from my searches google says no,can anybody on here point me in the right direction, i have claned the laser and cleaned and lubricated the sled also stretched the suspension springs a little, which only made things worse.
i got a suprise when i found that this player has burr brown dacs and elna cerafine caps, it does sound rather good other that the skipping problem which it is quite sensitive to.

I've fixed and improved a few of those players in the past. I've never had skipping issues with that series (DCD-8XX) yet I have on cheaper models due to where the transport is screwed to the bottom of the chassis. They had raised supports that tended to cause skipping with a fairly light tap on the unit.
I've also found the supply capacitors (commonly 33uF) degrade by now and cause issues.
As with all aged transports, removing the old grease off the rail/s and applying new grease prevents skipping issues when it skips in a similar time on discs. I prefer to use a 3in1 oil rather than the white grease as grease attracts dust, oil doesn't
I also have a rule of thumb in fixing CD players, sort the mechanics on the transport first, then electrical.
They are a good older player which can be improved by some basic mods. BTW the felt would have been fitted in an attempt to improve the bass, bitumen works much better yet heat can dry the adhesive over time and may fall down causing issues.

Thanks for the reply, had a quick look at all the caps in that area, including the smoothing caps and are as follows
c501/502 6800uf 25v
c509/510 33uf 35v 85c
c507 47uf 63v 85c
c508 100uf 50v 85c
c553/554 100uf 25v 85c
c704 220uf 25v 85c
all made by sme, did see two of those what looks like transistors in the area with two legs, have had trouble with those before on a sony.
the drive unit is on raised supports in this player

After servicing the mechanics...
Replace,
C509/510 to 50v, 105 degrees
C507 to same value yet 105 degrees (even more important as they suffer from more heat) that often goes low capacitance and high ESR
Check or just replace C508, C553 and 554
I've not experienced issues with those two transistors yet I know which ones you mean
The raised support, if it's the issue can be sorted by adding another layer of metal sheeting, although it depends on how far you want to go with it

Hi
i have now got the needed caps in stock, panasonic, i did service the drive unit, removed all old grease off sled rail and the rack and have relubed with 3 in 1 with a q tip, it still was sensitive to tapping,so i adjusted the tracking gain a bit and that appears to have improved things somewhat, as for i will call it shimming the raised stands, i tried that with another player in the past and found that it diddent take much to take the drawer height out so it would try to jam on eject etc.
will report again at the week end when i fit the caps

You may have to readjust the tracking gain again after the new caps are installed. Usually, I don't mess with them, only if I do (which is rare) replace the laser assembly which is always the last thing I troubleshoot. The mirrors inside the assembly cloud more often than a faulty laser diode, weakening the reflectivity, although granted they do get weaker with age
As for my suggestion on fitting an additional panel to the base, I meant underneath the unit, sorry I didn't explain it enough as usual. I've found pressing down from the top of each leg (closer to the rear of the unit) is less rigid. Even a metal brace would help if so I guess.
Good luck fitting the new caps and make sure you mark the polarity on the board before removing the exciting caps. Be careful undoing the ribbon cables and ensure the screws go back in where they came out from

In the past I had issues with KSS240 skipping easily (when tapping on top of the unit for example, as you describe), because of worn spindle motor. Trying a tiny bit of lubricant improved things a little, but was not a permanent fix. The real fix was changing the motor (which originally comes fixed with the chassis of the mechanism so that platter height is factory adjusted) - at the time it was available as a spare part but I doubt it is anymore.
+1 with atsirik
I have replaced the motor on Denon and cheaper CA models with that issue previously only to realize the transport is on a flexible base plate.
Could be just my luck though...other suspected areas are more common

have now fitted the caps, panasonics, initally diddent notice any difference, re adjusted the focus/ tracking gain a little, looking for a sweet spot maybe, fortunetly i remember where they originally were, its now backed off a little from first adjustment, handy when they are on main board and i can experiment on the fly, unlike that sony where they are on a bd board under the laser,it has no problem reading toc in what i would call the normal amount of time and plays all the way through, light taps are ok now, they have to be somewhat harder to get it to skip now, question is how hard is too hard, anyway, will leave it on soak test for a few days so things will settle down and report back then
