while im very happy with the 830875 for the next build what would u choose? at around 50 a piece i think its a steal for the quality it provides but if spending a little more what can compare or surpass. currently mated with the xt25tg30. would like to mate it with the xt25 again and run it from 80-2500
Tweeter upgrade !
Hi race27,
I would upgrade the tweeter, go to Scanspeak D2608 and/or go to 2.5 way !
I own TG Nomex 164 for few years and I'm still very satisfied of those speakers 🙂 Very good sound with Icepower 50/125ASX2 amp 😎
PEERLESS-NOMEX-164
The first version of the Elsinore Speakers was using Peerless 830875 and XT25.
The designer has upgrade the tweeter to D2608 and woofers to SB Acouctics SB17 :

I olso own an Elsinore like speaker based on Peerless 830875 and Foutek JP3.

Peerless by Tymphany NE180W-08 6-1/2" Fiber Cone Woofer Speaker
Timothy Feleppa's Pages: Speaker Measurements - Woofers 5" to 8"
..though you do have to be careful with that peak at about 4.7 kHz.
I'm not a fan of the ring tweeter: lacks depth and particularly image "development" IMO. Nor am I a fan of the D2608 which is a bit bright and lacks a bit of depth and image "development".
SB STAC
SB26STAC-C000-4 / Fabric – Sbacoustics
"airy" with good depth and decent image "development" above about 3 kHz (..and not bad below that either).

A larger 3 way bookshelf (8" woofer, 2" dome midrange and 1" tweeter) should be a true upgrade if you can manage the filters.
thanks for the replies. im currently using an 8" sub and satelite now. first design was a 2 way but wouldnt go down enough but was still enjoyable to listen to. ive used the d2608 before and agree its a very good tweeter but the brightness always steers me away.ive also used all the sb tweeters. I will do a lot of research on the sb17 for the next build as the current project probably wont last long before theyre gone and then on to the next upgraded project. its gonna take a lot to get me away from the xt25, the dispersion issue doesnt present a problem cause i dont nearfield these. my reference system uses the dynaudio 17w75 and the d28af with a 12" transmission line and this isnt that far away from it for 1/3 the price. im constantly building new projects trying to get as close to the reference at a fraction of the cost, at what point do u give up and say if u want this sound its gonna cost this. that seems to be my obsession that i cant get away from.

A shelving filter like TG put on Nomex 164 filter make it sound right without any brightness 😉ive used the d2608 before and agree its a very good tweeter but the brightness always steers me away.
-> 3.3 ohms // 0.1 mH before HP crossover
FIY after Nomex I'm going to the high efficiency route with 6.5" PHL 1120 see link below and attachment :
PHL ontwerpen?
I'm building the enclosoure this week, maybe I'll open a construction thread.

WOW! 😱
Not the reaction I've gotten from ring tweeters - especially when compared to Dynaudio's tweeters (which to me are a near polar opposite: smooth with good depth and very well developed 3D imaging but not the greatest clarity.)
Since you have also tried all the SB tweeters, what do you prefer from the ring tweeter that the STAC lacks?
The other budget tweeters to try are the Peerless Corundum tweeters. If you don't mind the loss in top-end dispersion then perhaps the larger of the 2 would work for you and allow a lower crossover-point (or more gradual slope at a higher freq.).
Peerless DA32TX00-08 1-1/4" Corundum Dome Tweeter
(..I've not heard this one.)
