I have this old Ar-es-1 turntable in great condition. I never changed the tone and would like comments on it`s negative and pluses. Also is there any tonearm that would fit without alteration?
The AR ES if that is what you have is an 80's variant of AR turntables (descendent from the AR XA) that allowed use of different arm boards so you potentially can accommodate a variety of arms. The AR ES and similar AR "The Turntable" model are very good suspended decks so would be capable of accommodating higher spec tonearms.
If the existing arm has the AR logo then it will probably be the Jelco sourced budget arm that was widely used on the lower priced AR EB101 turntable model which only allowed type of arm fitting.
If the arm does not carry the AR logo then you will need to describe it further.

The AR turntable a good turntable with a sapphire thrust bearing but the original Japanese OEM arm is not good.
An RB301 arm can be fitted along with a variety of arms, even seen a SME arm fitted .
This is a good turntable don't sell it !
Wasn't cheap in its day .
I still have my original (1984 ) version of the RB300 arm .
