Right I made a big mistake the other night with my sony hifi model HCD-XB4 I accidentaly shorted out the right channel while doing a little experiment with vu led's meter's the protection relay kicked out but did not switch back on I made a bad choice by manually switching the relay back on by bending the contacts I know idiot move🙂 but there was a loud hum on the right channel but still sound now there is just a loud hum on that channel and no sound please what did I blow and how can I fix it this hifi is 25 years old and I don't want to get rid of it I really like it
You have probably blown the output stage in that channel. You need a service manual to see what it uses (or open it up and look). It could be a chip of some type such as an STK or TDA type... but you need to look.
Its a STK amp but the thing is I know it's hard to come by the original chips from so as far as I know once I connect a speaker to that channel it pushes the speaker out all the way with a loud hum so I guess a lot of dc voltage on the channel I did still get faint sound yesterday but yeah just the hum now
It will be the STK that you have zapped but if you do replace it then you need to be sure that you have put whatever else you were playing around with back to original, otherwise a replacement might go the same way.
Older parts are a problem. Have you looked at Donberg?

I found the chip but the thing that bothers me everytime I search the chip a STK4182II it is rated at 45w+45 at 0.4%THD where the sony is rated at 80w + 80w at 10%THD so that bothers me but guess I will have to either order that chip or send it in for repairs
How Sony rate the complete unit is different to how the chip manufacturer rates the chip. Look at the massive difference in distortion. Also the test conditions such as supply voltage and load impedance will be different.
If its an STK4182II and a genuine part then it will be fine.

Well factoring in shipping to south africa and the fact that on that website its below the minimum amount they allow it way too expensive I will take it in to a repair shop around here and hope for the best otherwize its time too put ol lassy out the pasture and get a new amplifer for the speakers
