I've gutted an old Magnavox 175 chassis for a new build. About the only thing I'm keeping is the power transformer. The 120v line coming in appears to retain its original filter caps (discs). Is there any reason to keep these in a modern build or should I just add a and wire ups the switch between the switch between the transformer and the IEC socket? Apologize for the simplistic question but it's not one that's easily searched.
Is it a two wire power cord? If it is then these are the commonly referred to "death caps". Definitely remove them and if it makes it more convenient for you fit a fused IEC type socket and connect the earth/ground pin to chassis with a separate nut and bolt and a star washer. It should be a separate from anything else incase someone does something like removes a transformer and that was the earth/ground point and then turns it on and gets a whack. Either that or a 3 wire cord and a separate fuse.

They were there for line filtering (interference suppression ).
I usually came across them in tube radio repair and were quite popular back in the day but the old versions are liable to failure .

Hahahaha, synchro post Duncan. I googled what the Magnovox is and it appears to have a two wire power lead. I would say even in the US with their now polarised two pin plugs it would be a good idea to earth the chassis.

Yeah, I rebuilt my grandfather's post-war Zenith last year and updated it with a fuse and polarized two prong cord but i kept the filter cap across the incoming line (although I dropped the connection to ground). With this I think I'm just going to cut it all out and go with a modern wiring scheme. The "vintage" power transformer just caused me to pause a second, but in the end, it's still just a transformer.
Yeah, the x-rated cap was what I used in that radio, but is there any point in doing this with a more modern hi-fi amplifier design?

Thats the second time I posted on DIY Audio where I posted within a minute or so of another poster --
I can see a short Steven King story coming on ( film out in a year ) - DIY Audio mind transmission causing satellite communications problems , posters names being collected for further action -- CIA personnel forced to wear anti radiated thought suites as the burst in at 2am .
Taken to deep Arizona facility for "tests ".
( it doesn't go well ) .

All sorts of trash can be (sadly) riding on today's AC mains and keeping it out of the power trafo primary can't be bad. FWIW, I suggest you use a 3 wire, safety grounded, power cord and ferrite beads on the power trafo primary leads.
