Hi all.
I've been bumping around looking at various amp and speaker DIY sites for a while now so I figured I should sign in. I might be the worse type of noob; I trained as a EE, teach high school science, and ran a FIRST robotics team for many years. In other words I have just enough knowledge to nod along at all the right places but none of the experience to actually move into the expert category!
My short term goal is to build what is more or less a more complicated computer speaker. Mono speaker with a tube amp built in to run from either the headphone jack of a phone or computer or, as a second step probably, from a bluetooth connection. I'm not much of an audiophile - the project journey is the most interesting part although getting something to use while working on other things will be a nice side benefit.
Expect to be plagued with questions about a very fringe use of tubes!

Thanks.
Right now I'm looking more at the tube amp side of things as the amp side of things seems like a bigger part of the project. Or do you mean that most people post more overly complicated boombox type projects in the speaker subforum?
Either way I'll go have a look.

In that case I'd be visiting both forums, amps and speakers.
Is your amp likely to be a Voltage source, with a low output impedance? If so then the split is fairly clear.

Yes; the plan is go end with a transformer to pair with the speaker (or perhaps 2 but that is less likely).
A brief bit of time in the speaker forum has identified some ideas for 3 and 4" full range drivers although the first pass might well be with a cheap driver while I play around with the amp portion.

Thanks Pepe and Nigel.
I know about DIY especially electrical. It's been 3 years since I stopped running a high school robotics team and I still think about building robots. Luckily audio equipment is a little more useful than random robots or silly up engined ride on toys.
