Given the scarcity and high prices of new old stock SJEP120R100 transistors, I have been wondering if they could be salvaged some from other equipment.
Based on the following excerpt from a 2009 press release, it looks like they were originally intended for other more industrial uses:
"SemiSouth believes this is the first SiC transistor to enter production in the audio amplifier market. The JFET has traditionally been featured in rapidly growing markets for solar inverters, and server and telecom power supplies, among others."

Its a long shot, but does anyone know of specific equipment likely to have used these that might be available as scrap or obsolete?

Unfortunate that the business didn't survive, I think they would have done more
stuff of interest, and they were great guys.

Not SemiSouth, but I'll be vague because it's en vogue. There's a couple Yamaha organs that have gotten pretty old now where one could harvest two p channel vfets (sj76 i think) and one n channel complement. Disable those instruments at your own karmic peril, if the price is right.
Please don't even think about it. 😱
Leave the Yamaha organ alone and play and listen to that. If you must, buy the semisouth for 200 bucks from the ebay guy.

Just how many bean$ do they want for these SJEP120R100? I have a few I've been saving of them and the 120s the 550s and wasn't there a depletion mode version too? Maybe it's time to sell?
well, I'm really not choosy - what's on end of type - 100, 120, or what
ok , 550 really being different ( smaller) beast , but rest of them pretty much interchangeable

The depletion mode parts I have are SJDP120R085, and a few SJDP120R110
Nice parts. I am considering what DIY project they would be suitable for.

Are there any current efforts amongst chip makers to produce enhancement mode power jfets à la Semisouth? or SITs for that matter?
Yes, you can look them up on Digikey. There are about 7 pages of parts that fit the
SiC filter. SITs, none.

I’ve seen some of those. Seems like they’re primarily normally-on, or have the internal cascode to make them norm-off. I’m hoping to try some of the latter parts soon.
rather than dumpster diving for unobtanium obsolete parts, I think, we should focus on converting well established amps to transconductance/current source amps based on all available parts
i am sure it can be done and more diyaudio folks would like it
