Hey all,
I bet this is a stupid idea, but here goes.
I want a good wireless speaker for my bedroom which the wife will approve of, so a tasteful looking single speaker (like the Audio Pro BT5 in walnut but better).
I wondered if buying a pair of small bookshelf speakers and housing them in a diy built walnut veneered box, with appropriate opening at the rear for the speaker ports and a diy front grill to cover everything. I could home a raspberry pi and amp + dac inside the box so that the box looks like an all in one except it is just a chassis for 2 x stereo speakers and a mini amp + small computer.
How daft is this idea? Is it also silly expensive in that I may as well buy a Nam Mu So Q (2) or something?
I thought it would be fun to do and means I could get some q-acoustics concept 20 or similar to go inside 😀

Other than cost it sounds like a pretty reasonable thing to do, an issue will be finding a grille material that's opaque enough optically but not acoustically. Having the back uncovered might be good if its out of sight, plenty of cooling and no issue for the ports to ventilate unaffected.
However making the box itself into a mono speaker unit would allow more bass extension as the volume is significantly more.

Thanks for the reply!
I will carry on with researching now that you confirmed I’m not being totally crazy.
I can leave the back half open as it will be in the corner of the long dressing table we have. I did wonder about the grill material as you rightly point out. Obviously the grills would be removed from the actual speakers and then I need to find the appropriate material for outside.
Thanks a lot for taking the time to reply.
