DHL shipping to Canada

I'm looking at getting some F4 parts, about $150 Canadian worth.I've heard DHL can surprise you with processing fees, duty etc. Any Canadians have any experience with this,ie: approx. cost ? I just don't want to get surprised when my order shows up.I hear USPS is a lot better so why no delivery to Canada?

From the shipping page:

"SHIPPING TO NON-US / INTERNATIONAL ADDRESSES
We ship internationally from the US using USPS and DHL.

Any chassis related items you ordered will be sent from Italy using FedEx International. This is also a fast and reliable service. You are responsible for any duties your country's customs department may decide to charge you. See our chassis shipping information page for details. Please note that all FedEx shipments must be signed for."

It would appear that you can ship USPS, unless you are ordering a chassis.

My last order by from the Diyaudio store was a couple months ago (not chassis). It
went first by DHL logistics to a distribution centre and then was transferred to USPS
(with a new tracking number). It was delivered in Canada by Canada Post.

I purchased a couple of heat sinks recently from the diyAudio Store. They were shipped FedEx International Economy from Italy.

I paid GST+PST and a FedEx fee of around $12 or $13 for Customs clearance. I paid by credit card over the phone when FedEx contacted me prior to delivery. I think the fee is higher if payment is not made prior to delivery.

Canada Post charges a fee of $9.95 for Customs clearance if they decide to collect GST+PST. I believe DHL's fee is about the same as FedEx's.

My only gripe is with the diyAudio Store/Hi-Fi 2000 declared value of my heat sinks. They were $43 US each and $33.77 US for shipping, and the declared value was the total cost including shipping. So I ended up paying GST+PST for shipping too. I am used to paying GST+PST on the value of the goods only, not including shipping.

Out of the 3 (DHL, FedEx and UPS), I find the least objectionable to be DHL when it comes to customs and brokerage surprises and personally have had the worst luck with FedEx.

I do agree that I find the shipping to be pretty much double after I get the brokerage fee added on. That's not even the GST/PST, it's the courier customs brokerage/handling fee.

As a result, I try to order a bunch of things from the store when I do order but it's not very frequent.

If there is a CBSA office in your city, you can clear customs yourself. Call up the courier company and ask them to email you the necessary paperwork. Take the paperwork and your proof of payment/value of goods to the CBSA office. They will review the information, decide on GST, PST, duty, etc. Once that is taken care of, they will issue the paperwork which you send to the courier.

I have done the customs clearance a few times. In Vancouver the airport CBSA office and the couriers' warehouses are close to each other so all I do is take the paperwork from CBSA and go to the courier's warehouse and pick up my shipment.

Sometimes CBSA doesn't even assess PST+GST.
