I lucked out and found that dipping the worn section into a can of "As Seen on TV" Flex Seal and hanging it to dry is the most perfect repair that a person could hope for.

The next time I have urgent need to splice something like coax to test leads with clips, I just might try that instead of tape and shrink tubing.
Interesting, i have this exact problem with my HD800 where both sides have split, will give this a try.
