Visaton drivers, any good

Hi And thanks for reading.

Trying to find any opinions on the visaton bg20 driver if you have used it or heard anything about it at all.

I am using it in a 3-way open baffle speaker, have cut out the dust cap, fitted a phase plug, applied some damping to the magnet and chassis and it sounds good, much better than the £25 price tag would suggest.

Would it be possible to purchase a driver for about £100 which would be a considerable improvement over the bg20, or should i stick with the bg20 if there is little improvement available at that price tag.

I am using a fane bass driver up to 120hz, then i want a mid to cover me from 120hz to 6khz, after that i have a b&c tweeter to reproduce the highs.

The mid i am needing to use as open baffle, power handling of 50 watts rms, not a full range driver please.

Thanks.

there aren't many drivers that will match the BG20's 92dB sensitivity; you don't say which model Fane, so we can't judge how much room you have to move. 100 quid should buy you a really good mid, I'd look at some of the SB offerings in that price range.
re:'improvement over the bg20' - what sort of improvement are you looking for?
re:'not a full range driver' - most 'full range' drivers probably work better as a dedicated mid than as a full ranger because their limitations are masked by the crossover

Thanks for the reply.

Sorry, i meant the visaton bg20, that's all the know about the model number.

It sounds good, especially considering the price but lacks in excitement, snapiness, just kind of like overall everything. I really liked it when first purchased but has got boring to listen to. Just wish the sound would whoosh around the room more, liven up and excite me. More of a punchy kind of sound, that wall of sound effect.

Supravox 🙄 Their Fans!:grouphug:

"Our full range drivers, intrinsically, benefit from the absence of passive filter. The full paper cone, of exclusive paper formula, their exponential shape, bring us the neutral sound signature typical of our products."

Thanks! A little out of my price range, really am looking for something around the £100 mark per driver.

The visaton bg20 at £25 each is a giant killer and an absolute bargain.

Are there any drivers at the £100 mark which really stand out from the competition.

Thanks.

A good system design is more important than using excellent drivers.

Some comments on the system:

An open baffle midrange, transitioning to forward only radiating tweeter, suggests a directivity issue.
Crossing an 8" midrange at 6 kHz suggests a directivity issue as well.
Using an 8" low excursion midrange down to 120 Hz on an open baffle might or might not work well with regard to harmonic distortion, depending on the required SPL.

So there is room for improvement on the system design. I would tackle these issues first, before spending big bucks on top class drivers.

you missed my comment about betsy...not expensive
designed for open baffle, and sounds great
way better than visaton

betsy wow and ribbon

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated.

I did hear about the wild betsy but are difficult to get over here in britain, just am trying to get away from full range drivers, i am sure they are good but i have never heard one that can reproduce bass as well as a dedicated bass unit, nor can they reach the highs that dedicated tweeters can so full range drivers are actually midrange units. I would prefer to make three way with crossovers.
