Nakamichi PA300ll msrp

Geez phase!
I almost can, I was authorized warranty for them, and I still have mine (which I am not trying to sell, it's a keeper). I really wish I could help you with this. I even used to have the price lists until a few years ago.

Hey Phase-
I still have a Car Stereo Review issue with product listing/MSRP, pretty sure the PA300 is in it, probably '88 or '89 issue. I think it's in the shop, lemme look.

edit: It's not where I though it was, daylight will be required to search around for it, I'll check tomorrow.

MSRP was $395 in 1987. Here's a scan of the page from the 1987 Buyer's Guide.

My next newer price guide issue with amps is 1991, with the 301 in it

I did see a 1988 CSR installation article with an all-Nak system stating the PA300II MSRP was $425, and PA400M was up to $529 at that time.

Wow! That’s a great page of info from 33 years ago, and I am surprised that that amp was sold for less than what I have heard the Soundstream D200 was selling for ($600) at around the same time. I can’t verify that since I had just gas money at that time, and nice mobile audio was just a fleeting dream.

Thanks for the great information, I did search the web a good bit and could not find anything.

Funny to see that that cost is nearly $900 in today’s market!

Soundstream D200 was $449 in the same guide. Here's the page.

They were definitely Nak's direct competition, even more so than A/D/S had been for the last few years, because they also offered high-end cassette decks.

Maybe I'll post a few scans- advertisements and price guide pages. Most of what I have are '88-'92 issues of Installation News and Car Audio & Electronics.

Hmm, looks like I need to rescan to get the price...

Thank you !

YES Please 🙂
Love my nakamichi and soundstream.

This series of Sansui was standard mid-80's Japanese-looking fare. I recall not being impressed with them, and hearing someone use the slur "San-sewage". At that time, we sold PPI, Orion, Harman Kardon, Zapco, and an array of lesser stuff. The Sansui was a couple of notches beneath these heavy hitters, and we only sold one or two before deciding not to re-order.

The next series a couple of years later were totally different, one of the many PPI built brands to hit the market. They were pretty good and the price was nice, but they tended to get hot enough to loosen up transistors. I think most of them we sold came back.

Yep! I'll get that page for you this evening.

Their most popular model for us was the 40Wx4 PQ10, I'm thinking around $450. It would have been direct competition for the PA300 and the D200. We used a lot of them and the little 6-channel PH12's.

The big PH15 and PQ20 were a good bit more, and out of budget for most people.

My favorite from that line was the little 20Wx6 PH12. A neat little discreet amp that sounded good, almost doubled power into 2 ohms, and would run an entire system if your main goal was to listen to good music.

OK phase, here's the 1st Soundstream page again with prices showing.

Also posting the A/D/S pricing with the rest of the A's & B's in-tow. Note the Audia products, which was Clarion's short-lived high-end brand. Clarion had a mediocre reputation back then, nowhere near high-end products. With the Audia name, they tried entering the high-end head unit arena. The first aftermarket units I recall having diversity tuning. Obviously, these Audia amplifiers weren't anything to write home about. Audiovox had a reputation for producing entry-level quality products, JC Whitney catalog-grade, EQ/boosters for the first time buyer and such. The HCB-840 and 865 were the decent sounding amps I ever heard from them.
The Blaupunkt BPA-430 and 260 had been around for a while, STK-based models and were replaced a year or two later. The Carver amp was disappointing, you'll never convince me it was really 120W/ch. We discounted them to get them gone.
The Craig amps were some of the nastiest sounding amps out there, period. However, I did find a V541 quite entertaining when our moronic shop manager stuck a pair of speaker leads from a live one running a moderate volume in his mouth while finishing up an install.

Also posted are the front cover of this issue, and the Nakamichi ad from the inside front cover for UserAbuser.

The scans aren't great- sorry, it's the best I can do right now.

Many thanks for the scans TS, that’s priceless!

I love the old stuff. Back in ‘87, I managed to shell out enough to get a lower end Clarion deck, had some equally bad Minimus 7 type copies that mounted on the kick panels using brackets. The setup only worked with the car off, was a fairly loud car, and I enjoyed the engine sounds.

Well, we both know that a good sounding sports car needs nothing more than that!

Clarion's FM tuners were good. For my first car, I had to choose between Clarion, Fujitsu Ten, and Blaupunkt decks. I eventually figured out that the Ten was the worst choice of the three, but at least no one else had one. With a Tancredi EQ/booster and some forgettable 6x9's, it was loud enough to be entertaining.

I may open a new thread and post some of these old ads periodically. Hopefully there's no copyright trouble with posting an old advertisement.
