Shop Speakers

I live on a farm, and spend a lot of time in the shop working on equipment. Need a set of speakers for 5,000 square feet that will operate in a somewhat hostile environment, hot then cold. Have enclosures for 12" speakers.

Would need them to be a) durable in a hostile environment; b) able to handle 100W or more; c) reasonably priced.

Need not be "high-end", just a lot of bang for the buck. Need the drivers only, not the enclosures.

Appreciate your recommendations.

5000 square feet is big. Years ago I worked nights in a print shop that was big, but not that big. Maybe 3000 sqaure with a 22 ft ceiling. With a friends help I built a pair of speakers that we at the shop enjoyed for years. The woofer was a Parts Express buyout 12" with dual voice coil. The tweeter was a dome mid/tweeter. Worked well, sounded great. The were placed about 12 ft off the floor.

Depending on the size of your box (mine was large) you can get a reasonably priced woofer and pair it with a 3" fullrange as your tweeter. Crossover should be easy enough.

It will be interesting to see what other people come up with.

It's Kansas, which gets well above 100 in summer, below zero occasionally in winter, with some significant humidity. The enclosures I've got are about 20"x20"x40" high, and have a 12" hole with the typical posts for mounting speakers. Would prefer full range, so I don't have to cut holes and mount a crossover.

Thanks

The 12LTA is a (mostly) FR Pro speaker.

Here is our build with them (drivers tarted up) and you can see the tweeter added on top.

A lot of things are I've noticed. Maybe the lock-down?
FWIW, I have tried to get Eminence parts from PE that were out of stock for weeks on end. Called Eminence and they told me they had 150 on the shelf. Go figure. Look around, you might find them elsewhere.

The Beta 12LTA was in a project that was very popular 10-15 years ago called the Afterburner - I think.

Thanks for the suggestions.

David Dicks emailed me about the Audio Nirvana Classic 12", but they were above my budget (for a shop, at least). Checked the Sovereigns, and they look real good, but apparently they've got to come in from the U.K.

Still looking.
